THE HOLY ALLIANCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Genius of Liberty — 7 July 1818

THE HOLY ALLIANCE. ■ V.r. . We well remember the sensation which waa felt among ihk friends of freedom, when it was ascertained that the ministere of the allied powers, not content with regulating the fat* of “throne*, principalities and powers,” had interfersd to prevent a private individual from cliangcing bis residence from one country to another. We allude to the case of Lucien Bonaparte, which must be fresh in the memory of all our readers. We have now authentic advices that his waa not the only case in which the allies interfered, nor did they confine their interference to the preventing particular individuals from migrating. They have gone yet further, end been active instruments in compelling nominally independent powers to banish private individuals from their territoriea. The Catholics of Ireland have fercenturies been Utterly persecuted by the government of England, principally upon the ground that they were bound, and would pay implicit obedience to the Pope, even though...

CAPTURE OF PENSACOLA. From the Milledgevillc (Geo.) Journal, We ate indebted to Dr. Watkins, Post Master at fort Claiborne, Alabama Territory, for the following important intelligence: May 7.—“ Meters Grantlandt—l take the liberty of informing you, that gen. Jackson took possession of the Spanish town of Pensacola, on Sunday about ten o’clock, without the fire of a gun. The governor of the place and some of the inhabitants have betaken themselves to! the Barancas, with a determination to | maintain the post as long us possible.— The general was making preparations to move against the Barancas on Mon. day morning, when my informant left Pensacola. His lorce is said to be 1200, and that of tbe enemy 300. The Barancaa is strong, situated at the entrance of the harbor; but it is commanded by an eminence on which there is a fort Fin: taking of the latter will insure the former—his soldiers suffered considerably, before their arrival si Pensacote for provisions. I GENIUS OF LIBERTY. [Newspaper Article] — The Genius of Liberty — 7 July 1818

I GENIUS OF LIBERTY. TUESDAY, JULY J, “Sidney" „t|lll excuse us for nbt giving place to his strictures on Mr. McCarty’s last publication. To prolong a dispute with which the public is already satiated, would be doing injustice to our readers — to belabor a man when he ia flat on his hack, is ungenerous—to notice a man who has rendered himself so conspicuously rediculuus, is giving him an importance which he does not deserve—to give the lie to statements which carry op the face of them FALSEHOOD in glaring characters, is at least superflu. ous and unnecessary—to waste logical reasoning upon a man, Who cannot wield even the most / iUer.h sophistry without the aid of literary IHenna is like “casting pearl before swine"—-to continue the controversy, is like warring with the dead; fur Mr. McCarty is politically dead, and reasonable men of all parties will sec, whether they acknowledge or. not, that hia last piece, in the Washingtonian of the 30th ult although evidently the effusion of ano...

PERSECUTION OF FRKI MASOIfS IN SPAIN, [Newspaper Article] — The Genius of Liberty — 7 July 1818

PERSECUTION OF FRKI MASOIfS IN SPAIN, Extract of a letter received by a gentlematt in A'tiv York, from a friend in Micant. “Last week the Clergy excommumcated from theirchurches all freemasons; also all persons who may have Hi their possession any buj£ of masonry,or who may know of a mason and not inform against him. Poor fools! how can they point out a mason unless he should declare himself, which be co rtainly would not, as the Inquisition would imprison him for life. There is a col. Fernando, a worthy and brave officer, now in close confinement in the Castle, where he has been eighteen months. He was seised at the dead hour of night, and carried from his bed to a prison, by these wretches for being, as they supposed, a mason.” HiHamiesvnaMMmwMsvaM

THE RMC&SS. [Newspaper Article] — The Genius of Liberty — 7 July 1818

THE RMC&SS. LAWRENCE. It it understood that the tomb which covers the remains of this departed here, as yet bears no inscription. The fbliowt ing it a slight tribute of respect to his memory. Oh thirds the tomb where the hero reposes, The Goddess of Liberty fans It with sighs; ’Twas planted with laurels fc strew’d o’er with roses, And water'd with tears froth the patriot’s eyes. Now sweet be his sleep, for he died in his glory, His freedom, his honor and country ,to save; His flsg was his shroud, it was tatter’d and gory; He lived like a freeman, and died with the brave.
