"I have three personal ideals," he said. "One, to do the day's work well and not to bother about tomorrow. To it, more than to anything else, I owe whatever success I have had—to this power of settling down to the day's work and trying to do it to the best of one's ability, and letting the future take care of itself. "The second ideal has been to act the Golden Rule, as far as in me lay, toward my professional brethren and to- ward the patients committed to m...

JANUARY 1986 SACHSE SENTINEL PAGE 13 Hi JOE L. WILLIAMS CHARLES L. BAGGS SHERRY E. MILLSAP Some VA Pension Checks To Go Up 3.1% In January Veterans and survivors who have elected to receive "improved" pension benefits from the Veterans Administration will get a 3.1 percent cost-of-living in- crease effective Dec. I, 1985, payable beginning with January 1986 checks. Recipients of protected ("old plan") pen- sions are not affected. The 3.1 percent increase will also apply to parents of deceased veterans eligible for Dependency and Indemnity Compen- sation (DIC) benefits. VA Administrator Harry N. Walters said the VA is required by law to increase "improved" pension and parents' DIC payments by the same percentage, and ef- fective the same date, as increases in Social Security benefits. Income limita- tions for all pension programs and the DIC parents' benefit program increase simultaneously by the same percentage. While pensions for veterans and sur- vivors under the "old" plan remain...

PAGE 20 SACHSE SENTINEL JANUARY 1986 State to Help Texas Cities Compete for New Industries imiinini imiii iniii 11 imiriui 11 iiirxra By Governor Mark White AUSTIN-A new state initiative is underway to help Texas cities better compete for new business and industry with other states and foreign countries. Texas Cities for Economic Leadership (TEXCEL) is a two-phase program that recognizes that every city and region is different. Each is growing in different directions, with different kinds of in- dustries and opportunities for economic growth. With technical assistance from the state, Texas cities can improve their posi- tion to bid on a new plant or business. The goal is not to make some Texas cities more competitive than others but to pro- vide the best economic development training and information to every part of our state. After reviewing similar programs in 18 other states, the staff of the Texas Eco- nomic Development Commission devel- oped the TEXCEL program, and the Texas Mu...

PAGE 22 SACHSE SENTINEL JANUARY 1986 Youngster's Now Gun Comes With Responsibility For many young Texans, a shiny new rifle or shotgun will be the highlight of present-opening festivities this Christmas. A new gun can open the door to a lifetime of outdoor enjoyment, but it brings on a special set of responsibilities for both the new gun owner and his or her parents. Hunter education officials of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said one of the best things a parent can do after Christmas is enroll the young hunter in a local hunter safety course. The department coordinates an educa- tion program utilizing certified volunteer instructors, and the 10-hour course is taught periodically in virtually every county in Texas. A $1 fee is charged to help defray course expenses. Although hunter education programs are not mandatory in Texas, some other states require completion of an accredited course before a nonresident license is issued. Steve Hall, assistant hunter education coordin...

JANUARY 1986 SACHSE SENTINEL PAGE 23 * Corner o o o Dr. WiUlam L. Denam Q. Broken hips run in my family- I have heard of a new treatment for oste- oporsis. Does it work ? A. Osteoporosis is a con- dition whereby the bones beco m e thin and brittle, leading to fractures of the hip and collapse of vertebrae. About 20 mil- lion postmenopausal American women suffer from this condition which frequently leads to death About 15 percent of wo- rn en with hip fractures who suffer from oste- oporosis eventually die within three months from complications. Although much more frequent in women, men can also be- come afflicted. There is a newly releas- ed drug called Calcimar made from a hormone found in salmon, that seems effective in stren- gthing affected bones. Clinical experience to this point is very limited, but it shows good promise for the treatment of both post- m enopausal osteopor- osis and Padget's disease. Still the best treatment we have at present is prevention. Stronger bone can ...

PAGE 24 SACHSE SENTINEL JANUARY 1986 i Weekly Market Report by A. G. Edwards it Sons, Inc. "The Beat Goes On So Stay With It" The buying frenzy in the stock market kicked up into an even higher gear and volume for a five day period rose to a record 827 million shares. The fundamental reason number one through ten for this now three month old advance is the dramatic drop in in- terest rates and the perception they are going even lower. The announcement by OPEC that they won't defend their benchmark oil price but will go after increased market share supports this premise. One thing for sure, a con- tinued drop in oil prices is a big cost saver for both industry and the in- dividual and helps a lot more folks than it hurts. As is always the case, one pays for excessive greed and OPEC is paying the price—what a change a few years can make. Credit for the emotional push behind the rally goes to institutional money managers. We sense that those profes- sionals sitting on cash while stocks...

JANUARY 1986 SACHSE SENTINEL PAGE 27 DENTAL AWARENESS 61/ Chaile.* Ca\ta>1, V.V.S. BACTERIAL ENDOCARDITIS An American Heart Association committee has rec- ommended that certain dental and surgical pro- cedures involving oral tissues may cause a tem- porary bacteremia (bacteria in the blood stream) These blood-borne bacteria may lodge on abnormal or damaged heart valves or on endocardium(inner heart tissue) resulting in an infection called bacterial endocarditis. It is impossible to pre- dict which persons will develop an infection or which procedures would be responsible. Therefore the American Heart Association has recommended that persons at risk be premedicated with anti- biotics prior to certain dental procedures to prevent bacterial endocarditis. All dental pro- cedures that may cause gum bleeding (including but not limited to cleanings, injections, fill- ings, crowns, extractions, etc.) require anti- biotic protection.
