Still, while recovering users do successfully kick the habit through lesser means, experts agree the most effective way to achieve long-term sobriety is through inpatient treatment. During a detox period that can last up to four days, those in recovery experience a variety of side-effects including anxiety, sweating spells and nausea. Often they are overtaken by extreme exhaustion — the result of so much expended energy and lost downtime during their use — and sleep for unusually long periods of time. Further complicating the process is the some- times severe depression many experience. Since meth creates a significant continuous high, Martin said the return...

12-Step group offers support Admitting that you are powerless over the drug — that's the first, and for many the hardest, step users take when they come to Crystal Meth Anonymous. Part of the 12 Step family of programs, CMA is an organization of former users that meet reg- ularly to support each other in their ongoing recovery. Local CMA membership has grown significantly since the organization first arrived in Dallas in 2004. Todd (not his real name) is a former addict who now sponsors several members of CMA. "For a long time, I thought I could control my use," he said. "People who get [to CMA] have to admit they do not have control, just like I had to." Once a new CMA member acknowledges his powerlessness over the drug, he is encouraged to immerse himself in the group and in the 12 steps toward recovery. It's far from an overnight process, and in tact addicts are never really cured. "It's important for people to realize that you don't go to treatment, go home and stay sober," Todd...

nationalnews Washington activists await gay marriage ruling Washington, N.J, may become next states to allow gay weddings ByftnnRostow Contributing Writer Another week has passed, and the nine justices of the Washington Supreme Court remain silent. It has now been more than 14 months since the justices heard oral arguments in two same-sex marriage cases, taking the critical issue of Washington's marriage laws under advisement. Activists who started holding their breath back in September are looking like David Blaine after six minutes under water. In January, Chief Justice Gerry Alexander told the press that he hoped a decision would be hand- ed down before the state legislative session ended in March. Pundits hopped on the statement like a dog on meat, speculating that the court would issue some kind of directive to lawmakers in their decision. Perhaps, some suggested, the court would rule that marriage restrictions were unconstitutional, but then give the legislature the chance to ...

ing out against the marriage amendment as she promotes her new book, <eNow It's My Turn." Mary Cheney wrote that she almost quit work- ing on the Bush-Cheney campaign in 2004 because of Bush's position on gay marriage. Asked May 14 about reports that White House political adviser Karl Rove and other Republicans want to use the issue to mobilize conservatives for the midterm election, she said she hoped "no one would think about trying to amend the Constitution as a political strategy." "I certainly don't know what conversations have gone on between Karl and anybody up on Laura Bush the Hill," Cheney added in her appearance on Fox. "But you know, what I can say is look, amending the Constitution with this amendment, this piece of legislation, is a bad piece of legislation. It is writing discrimination into the Constitution, and, as I say, it is funda- mentally wrong." But Frist said he would defend the amend- ment, even to Dick Cheney. "I basically say, Mr. Vice President, right n...

Supreme Court refuses to hear lesbian s parental rights case WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court refused Monday to block a gay woman from seeking parental rights to a child she had helped raise with her partner. Justices could have used the case to clarify the rights of gays in child custody disputes stemming from nontraditional families. GEORGIA Continued from Page 1 call a special session of the state legislature to pass a new amendment for voter approval if the high court has not reversed Russell's decision by Aug. 7. Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund first challenged the proposed amendment before the November, 2004 vote, arguing that the ballot language was misleading and that the amend- ment violated the "single-subject rule," forcing the electorate to cast one vote on several issues. Lambda's suit arrived at the Georgia Supreme Court, where justices ruled that the question could not be reviewed unless the amendment became law. After an overwhelming majority passed the measure, Lambda re-filed its com- plaint in lower court. In her 13 -page ruling, Judge Russell found that the ballot language was clear enough. But, although she also gave a green light to several contested elements of the amendment, she drew the line at language that reads: '°Mo union between persons of the same sex shall be recog- nized by...

Students rally in Warsaw to protect rights Demonstrators fear new education minister could bring an intolerant tone to school curriculum Associated Press WARSAW, Poland — About 1,000 students marched through Warsaw on May 13 to demand the dismissal of the new education minister, tar- geting his right-wing views and ties to a youth movement that has attacked gay and women's rights rallies. The students held a rally in front of parliament after marching through the capital. Demonstrators said they feared Roman Giertych, the leader of the League of Polish Families, could bring an intoler- ant and overly patriotic tone to the school cur- riculum. "We're afraid of indoctrination in the schools," said Aleksander Powlowski, a 17-year-old high school student and one of the rally's leaders. The protesters said they most opposed Giertych's close ties to All-Polish Youth, a strong- ly patriotic and Catholic youth organization that in recent years has attacked gay and women's rights rallies wit...
