Hal Haralson speaks in chapel after following many avenues by Kristi Cargill The first time I talked with Hal Haralson I found out that he drank Big Red. I knew instantly that a man of such fine taste would be a superb individual yet I quickly learned of other amazing facets of his life. While at Hardin-Simmon's Haralson was an active student. He held a considerably hjgh G.P.A. worked three jobs and served as the president of the student body. Haralson said that while at HSU he realized that the faculty were there to help. Somewhere amongst his activities he also managed to "meet and marry his brother's girlfriend Judy Christian." Hal graduated in 1957 while Judy graduated in '60. Since graduating from HSU Haralson travelled down several avenues. While addressing the HSU chapel audience on March 24 Haralson shared the advice "It is important to ask yourself every 10 years what would I do if I could do anything in the world?" Having examined such reason- ing Haralson headed down seve...

Dear HSU: memories and smiles from Salzburg Today was the first day back at school from the two week break. Would you like to come along with me... to a flashback of the last two weeks... My friends and I were to go to Venice first for a day. Unfortunately we didn't know the train split in two and half went to Venice and the other half to Florence. So we ended up in Florence 12 hours earlier than planned. But it all worked out wonderfully since if we had gotten there at the later time we might have been sleeping on the streets. Florence was beautiful! The Duomo was huge but still amazing. I saw my first major piece of art there -Michaelangelo's David. My friends and I fell in love the Italian gelato (ice cream) and "out of love" with the Italian guys. Their hormones are in overdrive - which I found annoying. Then it was on to Nice. And what a train ride. We were settling in our "compartment" for the evening when we were informed if we wanted to wake up the next morning in Nice we ha...

HSU pond yeilds huge catch ;v Real U. In Bland Stand-in An unidentified man fishing in the Hardin-Simmons University pond hooked into the fish of his life last weekend. The man identified only as wearing a Stren baseball cap and weilding a fly fishing rod landed a 4412 pound king salmon on the banks of the HSU pond. "I was trying out my new rod" he said after the incident. "Before I knew what was happening I'd hooked into the biggest fish I'd ever seen." While university administra- tors suspected there was life lurking under the surface of the infamous pond no one knew beasts of this size resided there. "We are working in a warning to our freshmen and transfer stu- dents" said one adminstrator. "During orientation we will be sure "they are made aware of the potential danger of the pond." An upperclassman said the practice of throwing delinquent freshmen in the pond may have to change. "We just want them to get a lit- tle wet" she said. "We don't want them to be attacked by anything...

'" ""inwii inTT!MWimrnrKttmrm Batman Five: Batman Triumphant dubbed guano How many stars?? Are you nuts? Remember the "Batmania" that accompanied the release of Tim Burton's 1989 version of Batman! A lot of people felt that it didn't live up to its hype (of course not many films do) including myself. However look- ing back on it I realize that it really wasn't all that bad especially when compared to what has followed. In 1992 Batman Returns arrived an even darker vision than the original. That film had some good story elements but they weren't held together very well. The summer of 1995 brought us Batman Forever with a new star a new director and a new attitude. Val Kilmer replaced Michael Keaton in the role of the Bat and Joel Schumacher took over as director bringing with him a lighter more colorful touch to Gotham City. Some welcomed the change while others did not. I enjoyed Forever when I first saw it but I could see the direction in which the franchise was being taken and I d...

5-on-5 tourney comes to an end by John Green Rec Sports Writer The intramural basketball season finished its last week with three teams coming out on top. The Suns won their third straight intramural champi- onship. Not only have they won three in a row but they have not lost a single game during that time. They played Nix 316 in the finals and proved to be too much for the rising new comers. The final score of the game was 65 to 46. Chris "Dynamite" Wilkens and his roommate Tim "I'm No Rookie" Richardson led the charge for the Suns. Randy "Mr. Hustle" Ballenger had a great game for Nix as he scored time and time again to keep things close. If both teams retain their nucle- us then there could be a rematch in next year's finals. The women's final was between the Chicas and Wasichana. This was a battle for the ages with these women going at each other all night. The Chicas which were led by Dolores "The Dunker" Dimas and Heather "The Hammer" Stewart played an awesome game. They fough...

Once again it is time for Western Heritage Day. This Thursday April 16 students from area elementary schools will make their pilgrimage to HSU to experience life on the range. Community makes a difference It was a fair day in the middle of sum- mer and the seven of us stepped on the bus not knowing what to expect. For many of us it was our first time on an L.A. Metro bus and our assignment didn't help much. We were to initiate conversations with complete strangers on every bus we rode and in every place we stopped. This was total immersion and all we had were each other. We had no bus maps or really any experience in riding the buses; we were expected to just do it. So riding along on our first bus Susan and end up sitting opposite one another and she picks the roughest meanest look- ing guy on the whole bus to start a conver- sation with. I join in and before we know it he tells us that he lost his driver's license six months ago and used to be a truck dri- ver. I asked what he did during those six months. He told us he had been living at a Christian boarding house and that was all we needed. By the end of the summer that guy was faithful member of a lif...

MWaOIImEEEI Women of HSU's Delta and Trj-Phi host annu- al Caveman's Bash by Lauren Rose Staff Writer Friday March 6 was the night to get prehistoric. Just ask Delta and Tri-Phi. Caveman's Bash '98 held at the Knights of Columbus Hall could easily be described as a night of food fun good music and toga-wearing cavemen. . .and yes I did say caveMEN! Both guys and girls were decked out in full prehistoric attire at this now annual function. A particular suprise of the evening was when Tau Alpha Phi president John Hanna appeared on the scene with Corrie Schultze wearing matching caveman dresses! Music for the evening was both live and deejayed. Scott Williams with the help of Nathan Tandberg's cd collection mixed sounds most commonly heard on the radio with his usual karoke routine. A good mix of different kinds people showed up to have some good clean fun. Those in attendance were the ladies of Delta Tri-Phi Sigma and the men of Tau Kappa and 902 Beech. The music officially stopped at...

4 Students display portfolios by Richard Bone Staff Writer Hardin-Simmons University's senior communication majors have found a new challenge this semester. Since 1994 creating a portfolio has been a requirement for graduation with a degree in Speech- Communication. According to HSU's catalog a portfolio consists of research papers video and audio pro- jects advertising projects and a resume. This semester a new requirement has been added to the format. Instead of the norm which would be placing papers into a binder students are required to place their portfolios into the display case in Van Ellis second floor. Students are now required to put more time and effort into this undertaking in order to present a suit- able portfolio for all HSU faculty staff students and most importantly future employers. The latter is the main idea behind the concept of the portfolio. According to Dr. Darrel Baergen dean of the department of communication "the idea is to be able to present to a potentia...

i vmwm fflAnwtimwsi Spotlight on Dr. Ivey head of theatre department by Melissa Robinson Staff Writer In the musical Oklahoma a cowboy sings that "I've got a wonderful feeling everything's goin' my way..." The same could be sung by Hardin-Simmons University theatre depart- ment head Dr. James Ivey recently about his own life. It seems as if everything is going his way. Dr. Ivey came to Hardin- Simmons University from Texas Tech University in 1991 to head the department of theatre. His vast experience with many perfor- mance aspects of theatre such as stage hand-to-hand and Photo courlwy Mdta Relation Dr. James Ivey broadsword combat and stage and special effects make-up made him an asset to the department as well as a knowledgeable professor to his students. As each school year at HSU has its allowed ups and down not only for students but professors as well only the ray of good hope has seemed to follow Dr. Ivey throughout all his endeavors. On November 1 Dr. Ivey married local Abil...

Space family Robinson's saga contrived but engaging by Bryan Tuck Staff Writer stars out of possible four Lost in Space is exactly the kind of movie I would have loved when I was younger. It has everything: space stations ships hyperdrives laser guns and really loud sound effects. The 1960's television series has been heavily revamped into a flawed but highly entertaining film. The year is 2058 and the nations of Earth have resolved their differ- ences but have found new adversaries to fight. The excesses of the human race and the wars have resulted in the decimation of the planet's natural resources and the ozone layer. Earth will be incapable of sustaining life in approximately 20 years. To deal with this problem Professor John Robinson (William Hurt) has developed a "stargate"...er..."hypergate" that will connect our solar system with another. Colonization of the planet Alpha Prime will then begin. However to establish the link a gate must be established in orbit around Alpha Pri...

As far as videos there's "nothing new under the sun" by Bryan Tuck Staff Writer If you don't really want to spend $6 on the space fami- ly Robinson or you're wonder- ing why (beyond the obvious reason) anyone thought Species II might be successful you might want to check the video stores for some cheaper and in some cases better entertainment. It seems there is noth- ing new under the sun these days as practically every new big-budget Hollywood produc- tion is based on a novel a comic book another movie or a television series. With the release of the big-screen ver- sion of Lost in Space this week I decided to look at some less-than-current films that fell into this last category. The Fugitive (1993) 12 Arguably one of the best action movies of the 1 990's this film concerns Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) a respected Chicago doctor who is wrongly accused and con- victed of his wife's murder. After a train collides with the bus taking him to prison (a spectacular sequence) Kimble...
