$% Cairns (los.. THURSDAY. AUGUST 13.18S5. In. the face and full knowledge that the appearance of the town is the criterion by which, strangers i judge of the attributes of its citizens, ' in a similar way as an intending pur- chaser selects a store with a view to being well served from its business-like characteristics, no steps have b< cu taken to raise Cairns above the level of a bush town, to which the pioneer settlers advanced it when they cleared I away the mangroves and undergrowth i to make their first settlement. Herberton Mining Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Post — 13 August 1885

Herberton liaiag Note*. It is very gratifying to have to report a further improvement m mining throngboat this extensive district. -At all the centres of population there appear» a marked increase in the number of miners, and the long neg- lected alluvial near Herberton it attracting a great deal of attention at the present time. It is rumoured that Masterson's party, who may be considered the prospectors of the lead, are negotiating for the supply of a plant to work the ground, while a local com- pany is in course of formation to try some ground lower down the lead. Some smaller parties have been doing very well in the shallower ground near the prospector's flat. It is considered now that there is no ques- tion of the ground being payable were proper appliances, available. The lodes in the vicinity of Herberton continue to pro- duce an average output, and in one or two instances the tin is being gradually sunk upon, as well as working out the already de- veloped ground.. Our Brisbane Letter. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Post — 13 August 1885

Our Jïrisbaiic Letter. (roon ¿tra owv cOxBssniHDENT.) O* Friday morning- last, just before day- break, a fire broke out ia S truans Bond, the principal bonded store in Brisbane, and it is only just now out. Lujkily the buildings nearest it were of brisk, and the exertions of the fire brigade kept the Sames from spreading. There was, however, a great want of water, the mains in the neighbour- ing streets being too small to supply the numerous hose branches attached. This has been the most costly fire we have ever had in Queensland, the contents of the bond being' valued at over .£150,000. About £70,000 was, I believe, covered by insur- ance, the rest of the loss will foil upon importen. The store belonged to Mr. Tyson, it was three stories high, well built of brick, and is said to bare cost £16,000. I believe it was uninsured. It was rented by Ii. D. Morehead and Co., who also bad a larjre quantity of goods in it, but ware folly covered by assurance. The contests of the bond were pri...
