R.S.L. Annual Smoke Social The above fixture was held in the R.S.L. Club Rcums last Fri. day night. Alrho:,gh the wea ther was cold, a really good as semblage was present to enjoy one of the best functions held for many years. Proceedings commenced with the observance of two minutes'. silence in memory of The Fallen. After which the loyal toast was duly honored. President Stan Reynolds stateo that it was desired to make the evening informal - exchanging stories concerning incidents dur ing the period of war years. The President's advice was readily ac cepted, and at atmosphere of merriment prevailed throughout. The Ladies Auxiliary did a grand job in providing such a nice repast. The entertainment side per taining to the evening was ably presented by Messrs. H. McAlpin Doy Sparks, Cliff M tntern, and W. Thompson. Conmmnnity singing was also part of the pro gramme. Edmundson, said that commonsense at the time of the last Federal election had been submerged beneath the flood of Liberal propa ganda, so that the people had been enticed into exchanging the sub stance.. of Chifley's achievements for the shadow of Menzies' promises. He felt, however, that experience had had such a resuscitating effect that common sense would emerge this time to roll back the tide of propa ganda and swamp the Liberal ship of State. TENNIS ALEXANDRA TEAMS SHARE THE HONORS IN FINAL. Alexandra teams, W. and Y., played a draw in the final of the Alexandra and District Tennis Association on Saturday last. Wintry conditions pre vailed during the match, but the close nature of the game kept the interest keen until the last set. At the com mencement of the mixed doubles the scores- showed Alexandra Y. three games up, but this small leeway was made up by Alexandra W., and at the conclusion of the last set scores stood at 37 games all. B Outstianding Athlete In the Sporting Globe of 7/3/51, 3en Kerville wrote a story of Ray I Weinberg, one of the greatest ama teur athletes Australia has pro duced. The young champion is closely' identified with Yea, his father (Mr Harry Weinberg) being a member of one of the pioneering families of this area. Mr Weinberg himself, now of the Commercial Ho tel, Kerang, conducted the Commer cial Hotel ,at Alexandra, and Ray attended the Ivanhoe Grammar School 'whilst it functioned in Yea during war years. The Globe wri ter said (abridged) : "Victorian huriler, Ray Weinberg. is Australia's outstanding track and field athlete. Weinberg won the 120 yards hurdles at Hobart's national championships in world class time of 14.4 sees., and the 220 hurdles in 24secs. Golden Wedding There are still many in the Alex- andra district who remember one of its pioneers, the late George Whiting father of our respected townsman, Mr. W. H. Whiting. His second daughter, Jane, on 10th April 1901, was married at St. John's (Alexan- dra) to Cr. E. C. Rigby, C.B.E., of Hawthorn, and On Tuesday, 10th inst.; they celebrated their golden wedding by a reception in the Hawthorn Town Hall, when about 500 guests accepted their invitations.
