Chinaman Runs Amuck. [Newspaper Article] — The Wollondilly Press — 18 August 1906

Chinaman Runs Amuck. Charlie John Tye, Chinese gardener, armed with a tomshawk, ran amuck at Thornleigh Wednesday afternoon. He killed two boys and injured a police- man and another man. Tye, when at Thornleigh railway station, became agitated, and attacked John E. Hockley, slaughterman, who was wounded over the eye. The Chinese made towards Pennant Hills. Meeting Albert Gordon Pettit, aged 9, he battered his head in a shocking manner. He next attacked Horace Henry Aiken, 16, knocking him out of a cart and killing him. The man rushed into a house, set fire to some bedding, and was captured by two constables after a violent struggle. When taken to Ryde lockup the Chinaman asked the police to shoot him. He expressed sorrow for killing Aiken.
