Temperance Meeting. A meeting under (he auspices of the British Lion Lodge, I.O.G.T., Nowra, was held in the old Public Hall, Junction-st., on Tuesday evening last, chiefly for the purpose of hearing an address by Mr. Finlay Wilson, Visiting Deputy from the Grand Lodge. The attendance was small, owing probably in- no small degree to the inclemency of the weather. Amongst those present were several brethren of the Berry lodge. Bro. J. Roots occupied the chair, and the Rev. H. W. T. Pincombe and Mr. Alex. Robertson, along with the visiting deputy, had seats upon the plat form. Following the chairman's opening remarks, addresses were delivered by the Rev. Mr. Pincombe, 'Mr. Robertson, and Mr. E. C. Hewlett, all hopeful of the con tinued success of the temperance crusade throughout the colony. The Rev. Mr. Pincombe, in the course of his address, remarked that the temper ance people were not organised as they should be. There was much to be done in their cause and they could not hope to ...

Dairy Notes. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 14 October 1893

Dairy Notes. Mr. H. Fredericks, of Kiama, thinks it is almost impossible to judge the Illawarra strain of cattle by the point system. A cablegram on Thursday stated that the shipment of Australian butter by the R.M.S. Victoria averaged 101s. per cwt. on the London market. One of the best cows of Mr. .Tames M'Grath's dairy herd at Pyree the other day gave birth to three fine calves. Mr. M'Grath intends to rear them. The annual general meeting of the Jindiandy Dairy Company is convened for the 31st inst. Further improvements to the factory premises are now proposed. It is still hoped by the Department of Mines and Agriculture that something may shortly be done with the view of bringing about the grading of butter exported from the colony.

The Land Problem. TO THE EDITOR OF THE SHOALHAVEN NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 14 October 1893

The Land Problem. TO THE EDITOB OF THE SHOALHAVEN NEWS. Sir, — In his recent speech at St ? Leonards Sir Henry Parkes said thati was wiser for a settler to thoroughly sub jugate and cultivate 100 acres than to possess 600 acres imperfectly attended to. This is the one great fact which should influence all land legislation so far as the selector is concerned. The ex-Premier might, however, have gone farther, and said that under certain conditions, even 25 or 50 acres would suffice to enable an industrious man. to obtain a good living. All depends on the quality of the land, means of irrigation, etc. Ten acres of land at Mildura are often found more re munerative than the 320 acres at the com mand .of a New South Wales selector. If we had the unalienated land of the colony properly classified, and divided into areas of different sizes according to quality, the land problem, would be solved at once. The land could be taken up for the purpose required— whether pastoral, agri cultural, m...

A Strange Story. WAS IT GLASSON [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 14 October 1893

A Strange Story. WAS IT GLASSON ? Saturday's Blayney Advocata has the following :— ' In reporting last week the horrible tragedy which hns recently taken place at Garcoar we mentioned an incident which occurred in Blayney some months Ago, in which the name of Bertie Glasson, the alleged hurglnrand murderer in connection with the Carcoar atrocities, was men tioned. Our only reason for doing this was from a flense of public duty — a duty we hope we will never shirk — and not from any personal feelings in the mat ter either one way or -.the other. It appears out remarks on that occasion hare given offence to Senior-sergeant Roche, who called at our office the day the paper was issued, and asked for fin explanation. We told him our informa tion was got from Mr. Pigott, the manager of the Australian Joint Stock Bank. Sergeant Roche . then gave us his version of the affair, which was to the effect that on the first night of the Blayney show (held in March last) he and Constable Lenehan we...
