Colonial Wine and Brandy. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 15 March 1850

Colonial Wine and Brandy. THE subject of the production of Colo- nial Wine and Brandy appears to have of late excited unusual attention in the neigh- boring colonies, and more particularly in New South Wales, where an enactment upon the subject has recently been passed by the Legislative Assembly. Of the ma- ny arguments whith have been used upon the best method of promoting the develop- ment of this branch of agriculture, not one seems to have been more urged, than the free allowance of Distillation, as well for the purpose of ' fortifying ' colonial wines, as for home consumption and exportation. We do not advocate the allowance of dis- tillation in this colony, for the mere pur- pose of affording a cheap, spirit wherewith to impart a greater degrey of strength to our wines, believing such a'practice to be unnecessary where the wine hasjbeen pro- perly manufactured and of suitable iinds of fruit, and, we may say, would probably prove detrimental to the future market character of o...

THE OLD ADMIRAL AND THE OLD GENERAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 19 March 1850

THE OLD ADMiRA.ii AND THE OLD GENERAL. A new work by Sam Slick has been re- ceived in the colony, which is well worth perusal, emanating as it does, from a judge of a colony, well acquainted with colonial life, and in a lively, unobtrusive, and inof- fensive manner; laying before his readers many of the peculiarities of colonial life. It is entitled, The Old Judge, and abounds in scenes both humourous and instruct- ive. As a specimen, we lay before our readers one of the former. In subsequent numbers we may extract more extensively on graver subjects. The quiet inn in which I have been do- miciled ever since my arrival in Illinoo was yesterday the scene of the greatest disorder and contusion. Shortly after breakfast, a party of midshipmen, mounted on horse- back, dashed into the court yard during a violent thunder storm, with the speed and clatter of a charge of cavalry. The merry crew at once dispersed themselves over every part of the house, which rang with their loud and long con...

So we went thi- ther, pleasing ourselves with observing the Passers-by and also the Carriages, though their Number did now begin to diminish, and the Streets do daily blaze less and less with fine Ladies and flaming Liveries. THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL, "Vox populi, vox Dei." TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 185[?]. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 19 March 1850

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL, lVoxpopttli, vox Dei" TÜESDAY7M1IICIFI9JÍ50. WE have been favored with pome further particulars respecting the barque Moham- med Shah, whose arrival at Bunbury we re- ported on Tuesday last. Tho number of mares shipped at Ho- bart Town on Mr. Prinsop's account was nineteen, together with a young Lucifer entire horse; of the four landed alive, one died on the beach a few hours afterwards, the other Ihjee are reported to appear quito free from the disease, but, we are ex- tremely happy to hear, Mr. Little will not allow them to associate with any other stock for some weeks, until he is quite certain there is no danger to be apprehen- ded. Mr. Prinsep's loss by this mischance is estimated at about ¿C40Ü. It appears that the disease did not break out until tho vessel had been three days at sea; of tho total number shipped 52 had died, and it is not unlikely that a large portion of the remainder will perish be- fore they reach Calcutta, although the Captain consi...

The Gold Discovery in S. Australia. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 22 March 1850

The Gold Discovery in S. Australia. Our deferred account of Wednesday's Government Land Sale will now be found to have acquired a novel and deeply inte- resting feature (as compared with the ac- counts of all previous sales), from the in- troduction of a new set of buyers (to wit), " the South Australian Gold Company," comprising seventeen of our leading colo- nists. We have most respectable authority for stating that the first discovery of the alluvial gold, from which the origin- of the Gold Company may be dated, was coeval with that first discovery in California, which has drawn people from all nations to its shores. But, of this we are certain, that the secret has been most astonishingly kept through a period of nineteen months, during which the embryo Company has managed to secure to itself, not only a large quantity of broad acres, but a very considerable command of lands, watered by the Onkaparinga and other South Austra- lian rivers or their tributaries. Mr A. L. Elder, now ...

The Bush Fire. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 22 March 1850

The Bush Fire. It is generally admitted that those scenes are by far the brightest, which are endeared by recollections of childhood and youth ; and that they still cast a soothing influence over our advancing years and their attend- ant anxieties, although many of the actors, who then bore prominent parts, "have shuffled off this mortal coil," and have now left us but their vacant places to be filled up from time to time with memorials of the past. To all men the cup of life is measured out with a sweet and a bitter porüífl^Und th» alloy thus intermingled enable*" them £<vappreciate by turns the draught as it may We presented. The gloom of present and sudden moments, may be dispelled by recollections of former and happier years ; and exuberance of joy for present prosperity may be checked by re iiecting upon some past, or by the prospect of some coming adversity. By none of us, however, can childhood and early youth be looked back upon with aughfc but fond re- gret; and ...

The State Prisoners in V. D. Land. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 22 March 1850

The State Prisoners in V. D. Land. A correspondent at Launceston, whose accuracy we have had reason to be satisfied with, sends us some particulars of the al- leged harsh treatment of the misguided and exiled patriot Smith P'Brien. which sur- prise us not a little. On reference to our newspaper files, we are reminded that Mr. Smith O'Brien left Hobart Town for Maria Island by steamer on the 1st November, and as he was remo- ved to that penal station because he would not accept the indulgence of a ticket of leave, we expected to hear that he would be viewed in the light of a high-minded prisoner of war who contemplated the pos- sibility of escape, and that he would be placed under surveillance, but we little dreamed that anything like oppression would be exercised in his case. We gather from our correspondent that the state pri- soner, on his arrival was kindly received by all the officers on the Island. He was accommodated with a small cottage, and a pei'son was appointed to wait up...

Foreign Scraps. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 22 March 1850

Foreign Scraps. John Douglass, who was once a slave in Washington, has bought his mother's freedom for about £70. A wire suspension bridge has been thrown over the Ohio. It is 1010 feet in length. Lieutenant Maury, Superintendent of the National Observatory at Washington, states in a late address the following start- ling conjecture:-"It may be that there is now, at this very time, in the firmament above, a world on fire. Argus, a well known star in the southern hemisphere, has suddenly blazed forth, and, from a star of the second or third magnitude, now glares with the brilliancy of a first." Maria Monk, the author of the fabulous book on monasteries, who was said to be dying in a hospital for abandoned females, is, it appears, on her legs again. The New York Mirror, of the 4th August, mentions her arrest, on a charge of rob- bing a sailor of 14 dollars, in a house of ill-fame. Among the wax productions of the fa- mous Dr. Auzoux, in the New National Exhibition,.in Paris, is the mo...
