Valedictory. MR. W. MERRION'S SEND-OFF. [Newspaper Article] — The Hillston Spectator and Lachlan River Advertiser — 6 May 1899

Valedictory. MR. W. MERRION'S SEND-OFF. A pleasant little gathering took place at   the Club House Hotel on Friday evening, 28th inst., when about a dozen gentlemen met to present to Mr. W. Merrion, assistant post and telegraph master, an acknowledge- ment of their esteem and appreciation of him both as a government official and as a towns- man ; and to also offer their congratulations on his approaching marriage. Mr. R. W. Stewart, Mayor of Hillston. occupied the chair. In proposing the toast of the guest of the evening, Mr. Stewart made a very happy speech, congratulating Mr. Merrion upon his decision to forsake the rank of bachelordom, and remarking that there were present a lot of fine young men who persisted in remaining single, though he could not tell why (laughter). He had been almost requested not to refer to Mr. Merrion in his official capacity, but it had been the   lot of Hillston people to have had here civil servants who were not civil. This, ...

The sixth annual exhibition of chrysan themums and sale of gifts in aid of the Church of England, was held in O'Douuell'a Hall on Wednesday evening, 10th instaut, and, to the surprise of tho pub'io.and the extreme gratifio-ttion of the Secretary aud Committee, it was a genuine succsfb, the number and qualify of the exhibits bei'JKt despite the harsh usnson, very little below the average of thoKe entered on previous occasions, while the attendance of the pub lic was good, country people being largely represented, and tbe result shewed that there is yet ' Corn iu Egypt ' — or, in other words, that the people of Hillston can still find a few spare coin? to assist any deserving object. The hall was tastefully decorated, and the arrangements for the display of ex hibits and for ths disposal of various natial aud fancy articles presented by members of the church and their funds were very perfect The show was formally opened at about 4 p m. ...

GLEANINGS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hillston Spectator and Lachlan River Advertiser — 13 May 1899

GLEAN I NGS. (by Snip.) The story has often been -told of a bailiff who, when instructed to de clare' a 'Court of; Quarter Sessions at Hillston adjourned 'sine du1,' an nounced -.in stentorian, tones, 'This court is now adjourned for His Honor to dine J' Telling the yarn to' 'some friends the other day, it was capped with -a better one still.- At the- first sitting: of. the. L(-cil Land Board in Hillston the officer in attendant m the court was a young constable, fresh from the depot, and who knew nothing at all of the procedure of Land Boards. When the members of the Board had tiken.'rheir seats, the Chairman re quested X45 to declare the court open. The young officer, for a moment or two, stood with a puzzled expression on his face. Then he seized a bible and made for the door. Having thrown wide the portals, he stood on the step with the open bible in his hand, and said to the. .crowd oqtside, 'This court is now open, so help me God!' at the eame time, imprinting a hearty smack o...

OPEN COLUMN. We do not necessarily identify ourselves with ? ?' ihe opinions expressed by our correspondents , Sir, — I notice the Cadgellico par. re police ; court on the 6th April, in your issue of the 29th, has not been^ communicated to you in good faith. The facts have been suppressed and garbled to suit private ends. The truth - of the matter is that a woman named Young; sued me for ten pounds (£10) for alleged' defamation of character and reoovered 5/-. The P.M. refused to hear the . witnesses in oourt in support of the state- - ment that she was a liar whioh was tbe supposed defamation, and granted 5/- as the ' damage done to her oharaoter. It was her mother that wan fined for the assault; and your par. was the more unkind as mine has been dead several years. My Uncle's Wedding Gift. [Newspaper Article] — The Hillston Spectator and Lachlan River Advertiser — 13 May 1899

My Uncle's Wedding Gift. ' Girls, girls !' cried I, tri umphantly waving an old fashioned yellow envelope in the sunny September air. 4 I got a letter from Uncle Bob!' ' Open it ! cried Nelly rank ham, who wa^ my first brides maid. 1 Do let us hear what he s?ys !' claimed Alice Eden, my second. So I sat down on the big canvas covered travelling t-rink with my hair all down my back. I had just unfastened it for Nelly to experiment a little with the bridal wreath ; and with the bevy of girls cluster ing eagerly around me, I broke the seal of Uncle Bob's letter, and read it aloud with all the elocutionary airs- and graces I had learned at Madame Ben ton's 4 Institute.' It was in a queer little cramped hand, like the characters on a Chinese tea chest, and ran thus : — 1 D ii A ft Niece, — Yours of twenty first instant* dtily received. Am glad to hear that you are to be married to a worthy young man who is pbla to support -you. Accept my good wishes. By this day's post I send ycu a prese...
