The Wellington Times Published Every Wednesday and Saturday. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 1891. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 22 April 1891

PuhUihal Etery Wedneulay ami Saturday. WJIDXESDAY, APltIL 22, 1S01. We regret to learn that the rumour to which wo recently referral, with reference to the 8.s. Morctou being put on tho Mcl nnd N.W. Coast trade, has foundation, and that tho change will bo mndo nt an enrly date. Tho Melbourne-Const mall subsidy is £1000 per annum, or about £83/7/0 per month, nud the freight carried between tlio ports is so Bmall that tho T.S.N. Co., is losing fully £ loO per month by the running of the Flora. While we should look to the ship ping company to mnlntalu the service with a good boat, it cannot reasonably be expected thnt they nre a philanthropic institution, or running the trade 'for the fun of the thing.' Their object Is to make money out of it if possible, nnd it Is found that the Flora is causing a loss equal to between £1800 or £2000 per annum— hence the decision to put on a less expensive steamer such as the Morcton. The service with the Morcton will bo greatly reduced in cffectlvenc...
