EMERALD HILL t THURSDAY,, OCTOBER. 6, 1870. CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETIES. OUR contemporary of Bourke-street, in its evening issue seems determined to revive the old cry about " the " working man,"-" the poor man," and that kind of clap-trap, in order to make it " a people's paper,"-a name full of sound and fury, signifying nothing ; it is going to make capital of an attempted classifying of the people, and endeavoring to make some marked distinctions between the man of pence and the man of pounds, to exhibit a sort of magic-lantern grievance*, and to endeavor to convince the working man, whoever that description may more especially\apply to, that they; are much down-trodden and put upon-to make every man a politician, and them selves ' popular, so that they may !be turned into the Parliamentary reserves -and who knows but they may taste the sweets of office ? We believe, however, that the days of talking and writing silly, incendiary stuff-to makb " the people " discontented, invariably f...

IMPORTANT DEPUTATION. THE SANDRIDGE LAGOON. [Newspaper Article] — Record — 6 October 1870

IMPORTANT DEPUTATION. THE SANDRIDGE LAGOO On Monday last, Messrs. Johnson (Mayor) j Swallow, Westall, Curtis, and Joyce (Councillors), and Mr. Clark, Town Clerk of Sandridge. waited upon the Commissioner of Pub lic Works, in reference to the lagoon. Mr. Johnson, in introducing the business, said, no doubt the hon. minister was aware of their object in waiting upon him; it was the old song -about the lagoon; it was a continual complaint of. the inhabitants about the obnoxious smells proceeding from thence, from the want of a free passage for the drainage, and he trusted that the Government would do something for them before the estimates were passed for the next year. Councillor Swallow followed, as he said, with a repetition of the same tale. The lagoon, he might point out, was not a nuisance of their own creating. The Government had sold most of the land on the banks of the lagoon, and he therefore thought it only fair for them to look for the Govern ment to do something for them; ...

Well, Sir, in this case I wish you could stir! it until it so stank un der the noses of all the authorities conccrned, that they would be driven to adopt some'plan of improvement. At present, between the over-ambitious schemes of the Sandridge folks and the parsimony of Ministers, it seems likely , to remain in the same state of stagnation and filth that has so long made it a nuisance. It would surely be well that our own Council and Sand ridge should join in force, and instead of squabbling about the outfall of a drain or two, endeavor by their united influence to obtain from Government a reasonable grant in aid of Bome per manent improvement.
