GENERAL TELEGRAMS HIGH YIELD GOLD FOUND IN 1 ABANDONED MNN£ I Bathurst, Thursday. Highly payable gold has been dis- covered in an old shaft abandoned 4ö years ago on Hawkins Hill. A local miner secured a lease and form- ed a syndicate to seek gold among the old diggings as a result of which rich deposits were located in a shaft of the old Lady Belmore Mine at a depth of 1,400 feet. A conserva- tive estimate of the yield is 4 oz to the ton. The prospects are consi- dered bright in view of the except- ionally rich chutes found in this reef in the early days.

Hen's Fata! Effort A bliick Orpington hen, owned by Mr \V. Giiffin, of Northmead, recent- ly hid ii f roa It rgç- weighing six ounces and measuring 3|- by 2h inch- es. Inside was found a complete egg of medium size. A few days later it laid anotjper double egg, weighing five ounces. Evidently the effort was too much for it, for the other day it died. The three new kerbstone pumps, for the supply of Shell benzine and petrol to motor vehicles, about to be installed in Darwin by Messrs Jolly & Co, are an innovation which will be appreciated hy motoriä's generally. ITALIANS SERIOUSLY WOUND ED m PLANNED EXPLOSION An explosion, which occurred in a shelter shed at Morawa station, com- pletely wrecked the shed and did considerable damage to other railway property. Morawa is about 175 feet north of the Northham shed, in which 16 Italians were camping while waiting to go another clear- ing job. It was razed to the ground and the roof and flooring were blown a distance of 20 yards. The main station building, some distance from the shed, was damaged, the ticket office being wrecked. The railway signal and telephone wires were smashed rendering communi- cation with Perth by railway meth- ods, impossible. The police expect to make an early arrest of the per- petrator of the deed in which 5 It- alians were seriously wounded.

ADVISORY COUNCIL ELECTIONS -o No further votes have been count- ed since Monday last. A further batch is expected by mail to-night. Young now looks a moral certain- ty for iirst place. He is sure to get a big lot of votes to come in ' Batchelor, and if that does not give him the required majority, it is safe to say that 90 per cent of Pearce's No 1 votes will vote Young No. 2. The contest will then narrow clown to a fight between Watts and Pearce for second place. It is sure to be a close finish, Young's No. 2 votes being the deciding factor. We will all know about it when the numbers go up. GENERAL TELEGRAMS SOUTH AFRICAN FLAG BELL PASSED Capetown, Thursday. South Africa 'is to have two flags, the Union Jack and the National Flag, both of which will be flown from the Chief Government buildings in the Union and abroad. Profound relief is caused throughout the coun- try by the announcement that an agreement has been reached on the flag question as a result of eleventh hour pourparlers. A tentative agree ment was submitted to the caucuses of all parties and the accepted bill as amended was passed, thus obviat- ing a referendum which the whole nation feared.
