POPE STUDIES MEDICINES. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Woodstock Recorder — 19 September 1902

POPE STUDIES MEDICINES. Consternation was displayed in the Vatican recently when Dr. Lapponi, Pope Leo's private physician, was seen ;oing towards his holiness' apartments with a large microscope in oae hand and a case containing several viala and surgical instruments in the other. The rumour seriously ill, but soon the truth became known. Pope Leo has long taken roach interest in the progress of modern medicine, and Dr. Lappoai's object was to show him specimens of the various microbeB which have been discovered during recent years, wiu bu vx.prj.ui bv 111111 tuo exact mttuiror in which each of them affects human beings. The germs of typhus, tuberculosis, diphtheria, anthrax and other maladies were carefully examined through the microscope by the pope, who then asked Dr. Lappoui many questions, especially as co the manner iu which the germs find ttu-ir way into haraan bodies and as to the methods which have been devised for destroying them.

THE PEARL OF SAVOY. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Woodstock Recorder — 19 September 1902

THE PEAEL OF SAVOY. If the Italians followed the example set by Qaeen Margherita there would bo fewer complaints of the neglect of native artists by tbeir compatriots. Hei love of the arts and artists, and her own accom plishments are well known, and Italians never weary of telling of her kind heartedness. Many leading artists owe their present position to her help and sympathy.. It was Queen Margherifca who, recognising the musical genius of Puccini, paid all the expenses of hia musical education at Milan. The painter Farretto was a special protege of her Majeety, and to be a man af letters or an adept with the brush or the chisel is a passport to her favour. A good story ia told of her first meeting' with Gregoroviua. She invited him to dance in a quadrille with her, but the poor scholar could no more dance than fly, and had to excuse himself. Where upon the Queen remarked : ? Very well ; since you don't dance, I will give up tbe quadrille, and we will have a chat to- gether.'
