Fungoid Diseases Destroying the Plague Caterpillars and Cut-Worms. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 19 January 1900

Fungoid Diseases Destroying the Plague Caterpillars and Cut-Worms. V ' From the Agricultural Gazette of N.S. W The 'fungus disease reported by the Entomologist to be destroying the plague caterpillars that have been doing so much damage during the last four months through the whole of the central districts of New South Wales, appears to be so universal in its effects that very few of the full-grown catapillars will ever reach the pupal stage to produce a fresh crop of moths. Specimens have been received from all parts of the infested districts ; but not a single one has reached maturity, though carefully fed and looked after in the breeding cages, one after the other having developed the* fungus parasite. The caterpillars in the field when suffer ing from this disease become listless, black, and shrivelled, bury themselves in the ground, and are eaten by the more active ones, so that the infection is rapidly spread. If there are any stumps, shrubs, or fences in the locality the dyin...

(To the Editor of the Bombala Times) [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 19 January 1900

{To the Editor -.f the Bombala Times J . Sir,— It has long been my intention to briug under your notice a little matter which needs placing before tho public in order thut those most concerned may bo given to understand that their conduct is anything but manly and upright,: but rather both cowardly and disgraceful, and that such conduct should be put down, and an example made of the guilty ones by those whoBe duty it 18 to not only pro tect, but to preserve law and order. ' With tbeso few remarks I now come to the point_ in question. We have residing in this little town of ours a poor old man (I hope he will pardon me for calling him ] old) whose proper name is William Whit by, but who is more frequently called by another. This poor individual is a most quiet, sober, and inoffensive man ; when let alone ho will interfere with no one, and the most that can be said of him is . that he is funny in his ways. Now, this causes bim to be made the butt and laughing stock of a few who seem t...

Vegetable Marrow Jam. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 19 January 1900

Vegetable Marrow Jam. This is an inexpensive and very nice jam for eating with bread and butter as you would marmalade. Four pounds of vegetable marrow, four pounds of loaf sugar, an ounce of white ginger sliced, the juice of two lemons, the rind of one cut thin and tine, a small saitspoontui or cayenne pepper, a wineglassful of Scotch whisky. Peel the marrow and remove the seeds, cut first into thin slices, and then into narrow strips, put tli9m into a syrup of half a pound of brown sugar and a pint of boiling water, let it stand in this for two days, then strain it and throw away the liquid ; add the marrow to the other ingredients, and boil for about an hour. Put into pots, and fasten down when cold in the usual way. Why has a man lost all his teeth when one is extracted ? — Because he is a tooth less man.

HUMOROUS COLUMN. ' EXTENDED CREDIT. A minister in one of the Sootoh villages being in want of a horse, bought one at a local fair, and, not being a judge of horseflesh, he sent for a farmer belonging to his congregation to give his opinion of the'bargain. ? 'What did ye -pay for him P' tlie farmer asked, as he oritioally surveyed the nag. . The minister named the price. 'Man, it's ower muokle,' said the farmer, ' the billie's cheatit ye.' ' Well, if he has done so,' said the minister, in righteous indignation, ' he'll have to aooount for it at the laBt day.' SOMETHING ABOUT THE EYES. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 19 January 1900

? ::o:: ? SOMETHING ABOUT THE EYES. Dark . eyes are said to indicate power, light eyes delicacy. With black eyes we are told the intellect will be powerful, the passions strong. Hazel eyes are considered to show steadiness and power of affection ; fascinating green eyes belong to deceitful and coquettish persons. What the owners of blue eyes may lack in power and emotional strength they make up in subtlety and ver satility. ? ? ? Russia has something like thirty women pharmacists.

SOME INCIDENTS OF THE BOER WAR OF 1881. [Newspaper Article] — Bombala Times and Manaro and Coast Districts General Advertiser — 19 January 1900

SOME INCIDENTS OF THE BOER WAR OF 1881. 1 In view of the present orisis it may not be uninteresting (says the London, ' Globe ' military correspondent) to recall some experiehces of the Boor War of 1881. At Laing's Nek the Boers wore without artillery, but all mounted and woll armed, and amply supplied with ammunition. They numbered about 2,000, fought under excellent cover, and their fire was most 'effective. Sir George Colley's force numbered 1,200 of all ranks, with nine guns ; our main attack was uphill, was ' .fully exposed, and signally failed with heavy loss. At the' action of the Ingogo we occupied a small plateau, roughly triangular in shape, forming part of tho -main ridge with which it was connected by necks slightly lower than the plateau we held. The Boer attack on our position commenced about 12 o'clock, and was carried on pluckily . Towards 8 it began to slacken, and they apparently abandoned. tho idea of trying to win the position ; at sun down their fire slackened, ...
