I'VE BEEN READING If you are Interested in books, or think you can write a bit yourself, write to I. B. Beading, "Stock Journal." He wants to know you.—Ed. "S.J." "HAWKEYE." [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 18 April 1924

FVE BEEN READING If you are interested in books, or think you can write a bit yourself, write to 1. B. Beading, 'Stock Journal.' He wants to know you. — Uil. 'S..1.' ?HAWKEYC.' (By Herbert Quick. — Our copy from Itobertson and Mullens, Ltd., Mel bourne.) This is a good story of pioneering lays in one of the States ot' America. Wild-shooting cowboys do not come into it, oui li is none me worse ior xnat. It is a vivid story of fine people strug gling against heavy odds to blaze the track. All of the people are not fine, of course — it would be rather monoton ous, perhaps, if they were. As in life, so the characters in this book are mixed. Clearly the author knows his subject. You feel that lie himself has taken part in the pioneering game, and his admir ation for the pioneers shines across the pages. Altogether it is a remarkable book and deserves an even bigger cir culation than a thrilling cowboy yarn, which, after all, does not represent the real America. KANGAROO. (By D. H. Lawren...

QUAIL AND GILL BIRDS. COUNT YOUR 'BAG!' Mr. Oakes, Chief Secretary, has de cided that tho number of quail and gill birds which may be shot by any one person in a day shall be restricted to fifty. Concerning the representations of a deputation which waited on him in re- j gard to the operations of the embargo to be placed upon the shooting of quail Mr. Oakes decided that an open season for one month as regards stubble quail only be declared — tnat period to be from May 15 to June 14. 1924, both I days inclusive, and to apply to the whole State. 1 'The Dresent limitation of TOO liirrl« per day will, in the altered circum have, therefore, limited the bag to 50 birds per day in future.' No restriction at present exists with regard to the slaughter of gill birds, says Mr. Oakes, but from the com mencement of the open season on April lo, 1925, the restriction will operate.

THE S0U1B AGMM. For the third year in suc cession, the District Exhibit from the Sooth, Coast and Tablelands has come out on top at the Sydney Show. It is regrettable but—we understand! [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 18 April 1924

It is regrettable but ? we understand I J T is extremely regrettable that the country tour arranged for officers of the visiting British Fleet has fallen through. Some people will imagine that pressure of pleasure in the city is solely responsible. It may be mentioned that Admiral Sir Frederick Field personally regrets that officers and men of the Meet are unable to avail themselves of the invitation to visit the country. It is explained that the departure of the Light Cruisers to Brisbane has reduced the personnel of the men available to participate in the official pro gramme. This has, perforce, led to curtailment. No discourtesy whatever to the country is intended. Graziers who had gone to the trouble of making arrangements for the visitors will understand;, we trust. At the same time the regret must be expressed that our visitors are not seeing the Real Australia. Admiral Sir Frederick Field, speaking at a city function said 'he was satisfied from what he was told and what he ha...

Mr. Bruce will hear further from the Meat Council [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 18 April 1924

Mr. Bruce will hear further from the Meat Council WHATEVER any of us may think about it, we all can ogres tSiat the Prime Minister (Mr. Bruce) spoke straight to the deputation £rotn the Australian %Ieat Council that awaited upon os MoBflsy. There was nq rail-sitting about it I We know now where the Federal Government stands. And that is all to the good. The trouble often is in politics to find out just where the Government does stand. The Federal Government 'will do nothing more for the Australian Meat Council until the Council puts before it a vrorkable scheme. Mr. Bruce wants to know Just what the Council has done in the last twelve months. One way and another the Council has done a great deal, and it. should not findi it difficult to put a convincing case before the Prime Minister. Incidentally, it would have done more but for dilatory politicians I We have to recognise that opposition is developing to the Australian Meat Council. Most of this opposition is underhand, or behind t...
