Death of as old Resident. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 23 October 1889

Death of an old Resident On Wednesday last Mr. John Mallon passed away at the advanced age of 89. The de- ceased came to the district many years ago, and settled in Merricumbene, where he re- sided up to the time of his death. Longevity seems to have been a characteristic of his family for his father attained the great age of 95 yoars, and his grandfatiier to the rare age of 104. The deceased's remains were interred in the Roman Catholic cemetery on Friday, when a large concourse of people at- tended to do honor to one who in his life- time earned the respect of all who knew him. It was not our privelege to have personally known the subject of our remarks, but from one and all we have heard the universal ver- dict, which we all so like to deserve, vis. : that Mr. John Mallon was a man, whom to know was to admire and respect.

Heart-rending Accident. It has been our painful lot to chronicle from time to time some sad and fatal accidents, and yet again this week we have to report another horrible occurrence, one almost sick ening in the intensity of sadness it produces. We refer to the accident now so familiar to all, whereby Theresa (Tesa), youngest child of Mr. William Constable, 7 years of age, lost her life. It appears the poor little child   was playing with some children on Friday evening, just about dusk, and whilst climbing over a fence die dislodged a heavy top-rail or cap, causing it to fall on her body, and producing almost instant death. The shock to the whole community was most pro nounced, and the awful grief of the parents and relatives and a large circle of friends can only be adequately realized by those who have little girls who have attained the inter esting age of 7 years. We hear on all sides that deceased was of a peculiarly lov able disposition being a great favourite wi...

Inquiry. An inquiry was held at Gundary on Sat urday last before Mr. O. Maunsell, coroner, touching the death of Theresa Constable, when the following evidence was taken : — Cyril Hunt, being duly sworn on oath, saith : I knew the deceased Theresa Con stable, with whom I and my brother Leigh were playing yesterday in Mr. Constable's paddock. We were running trying to catch one another. Deceased was getting up on the gate when the big log fell on her ; she pulled the log down ; the log was resting on the two gate posts, across the gare. The log struck her when she was on the gate and knocked her down. The log rolled off her when she reached the ground. She was dead the minute it fell on her: I called out to deceased's sister, who told her mother. William Constable being duly sworn on oath, saith : I am a farmer residing at Gun dary ; I identify the dead body outside as that of my daughter Theresa, aged seven years. About 7 p.m. of yesterday I heard Lizzie, my daughter, call out to he...
