EUROPEAN TELEGRAMS. London, Jan. 14. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 18 January 1887

EUROPEAN TELEGR4IS., London, Jan, 14. The conference betwecen the Union ists and the other leaders of the Liberal party has been adjourned, as it was found that no practical result could be arrived at until after the meeting of Parliament, which is fixed for the 27th inst. The French press, commenting on Prince Ilismarck's speech in the Reich stag, declares that it is marked by great brutality. A less optimist tone now prevails generally with regard to the prospects of peace in Europe. The Vienna press declares that the alliance between Germany and Austria is at an end. The official estimate of the United States wheat crop is 457,000,000 bushels. The Standurd considers that the Victorian loan of £3,000,000 will probably be taken up at a little over the minimum, which has been fixed at £102. Colonial stocks have receded .1. The Russian Government has pub lished an oficial intimation that the Czar will adhere to his choice of Prince Nicholas of Miugrelia as the new ruler of Bulgaria u...

The Traralgon Record "MODERATE, BUT PROGRESSIVE." (Published every Tuesday & Friday morning.) TUESDAY, JANUARY 18, 1887. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 18 January 1887

"'*IOpE.nATE, RUT Pr.OprESSlvE." (Pablishrd very.Tncsdnay &Friday morning.) TUESDAY, JA.XUl?RY. 18, 15s. TnE. electric wire has awakened in us :warlike.expectations, and the speech of PRINCE. BISMARCK unmistakably leads us to.anticipate? war. On the. llth.of this month the German Chancellor, in the course of-his speech in Parliament on tile Army Bill, declared in terms of implacable hatred and. bitterness, that an increase of 41,000.men in. tile. Ger man Army. was absolutely necessary, not only to maintain the prestige of the Empire, but dreadful to relate, to ut terly prostrate her. military rival France-and, be it noted that that prostration was to be so complete, that a resuscitation of the.latter country to her former condition would be an im possibility. Language of such a savage and cruel character has never before been indulged in by modern statesmen, and certainly lead to the conclusion that the " man of iron and of blood,:' intoxicated by his success at Se dan, sees...

THE WIZARD OF THE DIGGINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 18 January 1887

TILE WIZARD 0' TILE DIG GI-V(S. 01398. By F. Simething over twelve months hack there died in England a celebrated mnan who, some thirty years before, when he was in Victoria, played an imiportant role in connexion with one of the mur ders that were unfortunately too fre quent in the golden and lawless age. This man was Walter Bently Wood bury, whose practical scientific re searches in connection with photo graphy have made his name a house hold word in every country where a camera is known-which nowadays is tantamount to saying '" wherever the sun shines." He was by profession a civil engineer, but early in the " fities" he found himself whirled into that mis cellaneous tide of humanity thatwashed up on the shores of Aust?alia in search of gold. To a man of Woodbury's mental power andscientitic:ttainments it was not so much the wish of making a fortune, as the love of adventure, aud the desire to see the unknown places of 1 the world that prompted him to join 1 the restless throng of...
