THE MURDER NEAR ARARAT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 31 May 1879

THE MURDER NEAR ARARAT. (FROM THE ARARAT ADVERTISER, MAY 27.) About 5 o'clock on Sunday afternoon the inhabitants of Ararat were startled by a repot that a most cold-blooded murder had been perpetrated close to the town, in the full light of the day. On inquiry, the report was found to be only too true, the unfortunate victim proving to be a Chinese gardener named Chin Ah Keoog, who, for 18 years, has been living in his garden on the edge of the big waterhole, close to the embankment of the Green-hills Lakes. The man was last soon alive in his garden about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, when four young boys who had picked some of his vegetables were annoying him. He coooyed, and Mrs Macnamara coming towards the place the boys decamped. About a quarter to 5 Mr. J. D. Smith, who was walking along the embankment of the lake, heard moans issuing from the hut, and seeing Macnamara's children asked them if they knew whether the China- man was ill. Not, ireceiving an answer from the children,...

CH I P . Did you go to the banquet ? I did I and upon my word I was sorry to see men of standing make la rrikins ofthemselves I Now, when you go to enjoy yourself, is it, I ask, a' nice thing when talkiog to a friend next you, say of politics or hard times, to get a bit of broad in the eye, or a lump of orange peel under the ear P I for one say not I and it is really a-pity that respectable men cannot behave like gentlemen upon euoh festive occasions, beside these sort of foolish pranks disgust those who invite a guest ! and I have no doubt the juest also I Think of it I I 10I people at a table, and only two or three who forgot themselves. It does all very well in a :bain, or in a road side camp, obut it is too bad dtd public banquet, and that too a banquet to a gentleman universally esteemed by us all I 'Don't do so any more please, or you will not only.bring disgrace upon yourselves, but lead others to' follow your foolish and disgraceful conduct. Enough said, dear boy. Tony.

pxandja & Pea ,tnundard SATURDAY, FZrn JUNE. o Ten banquet given by the electors of T this district on the 2ad instant to our | representative, Mr Thomas Hunt, must have been alike gratifying to those who b had assembled to do honor to that a gentleman as to our worthy member himself, for such social gatherings teach o men that if. they go on the straight a track they will over find their exertions meet the approval of their eonttuenns , and they themselves will gain the ren . speot of all parties, whether of the c same political opinions or adverse in their views. That Mr Hunt during the time be has sat in Parliament has h gained the confdence of sil olassos, no one who saw the gathering on Monday will deny, as Free-traders and Pro- t teetionists eat side by side, and joined c alike in the ringing cheers which greeted our guest when he rose to ret epond to the toast of his health, and we I venture to say it would indeed be a bold man who upon the occasion of an oleo- n tion...

THE KELLY GANG. MANSPIELD, Monday. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 7 June 1879

THE KELLY GANG. MANSFIELD, Monday. It is generally believed here that the police have recently been on the tracks of Ned Kelly. A short time ago, Mrs Skillion, a relative of Mrs Kelly, went to Melbourne to bring away Mrs Kelly's child from Pentridge. Mrs Skillion and the child arrived at Mrs Kelly's late residence, Greta, a few days ago, and immediately after Ned Kelly came there for the purpose of seeing the child and his sister. I believe the police got word of the affair, and set out from Benalla last week, but the bird had flown, and, as has been reported, the police returned without any success. A large party are again on the move. It is currently reported   here that the footprints said to have been Monk's, a short distance from the big tree, where the police state Monk must have dis- mounted, can be proved to belong to another person, who was in company with two others, this individual having dismounted at the precise spot on the 26th April, when riding along tha...

ENGLISH NEWS LONDON, 24th April. The Queen is returning from Italy. Mr Gladstone has been presshited with an address by a deputation from the Aylesbury Liberals. He stated that at the general election the people would be asked whether they would perfer to be ruled by a novel method of govern ment by which Parliament was reduced to a mere reg'stry office or a wise and cautions mode of government to which Liberal Administrations had accustomed them. Sir Austin Layard is returning to his post as ambassador at Constanti nople. A protest has been presented by the commissioners to the Egyptian Minister of Finance, which declares that they cannot remit the new financial project if it canses any legal chance in the relations actually existing between Egypt and its creditors. A movement is on foot to induce the Scotch members to sanction a proposal to ask the Government for an act for a tax of twopence in the pound for three years on Scotland to relieve the shareholders of the City;of Glasgo...
