Facts & Fancies. Squirrels' Hotels. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 18 April 1911

Facts & Fancies. ? ^ ? . Squirrels' Hotels. There are two, hotels in Saginaw, Mich., U.S. A,, which are peculiar. They have no ba^h-rooms, no tele phone, no bar, no billiard-room, no gas or electric light, and . are run without the aid of a smiling clerk or tip-absorbing bell-boys. These hotels were erected, by John Bolton just in front of one of the other ho tels. They are made of stout ma terial, and are both fastened to a tree. The only guests are squirrels, and these come and go and have the run. of the houses without re gistering. ? : Large quantities of nuts are purchased by: interested people every week. These are placed where the guests can reach them and are carried away. '?? ?

SCALY LEG: SHOWING ONE LEG OF FOWL TREATED AND THE OTHER UNTREATED. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 18 April 1911

SCALY LEG: SHOWING ONE LEG OF FOWL TREATED AND THE OTHER UN TREATED. When fowls become scaly-legged it is a sign that the runs upon which they live s.re in a filthy condition. The undersides of the scales become coated with foul substances which foster the breeding of insects of a bxirrowing kind. These pests bur row under the scales ot tne legs and their deposit a chalk-like fungus which increases to such an extent as to lift the scales up from the shanks. If not checked this fungus growth spreads all over the shanks and ren ders the fowl quite lame. The in sects live upon the blood which they suck from the legs of their victims. The remedy for scaly legs is. to alter .the insanitary conditions under which the fowls are kept,-and to dip the shanks up to the .hocks daily into petroleum till the' fupgua* can be easily removed, whenr-a - goo dressing of vaseline sliould 'be ap plied to -the legs.: To prevent the ailment the legs of fowls' should oc-* casiohally be dressed: with petrol...

ADVANTAGES OF INCUBATORS. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 18 April 1911

ADVANTAGES OF INCUBA TORS. There are many advantages to be gained from using an incubator. The great thing is that one. is able to produce a larger number of chicks in a given1 time than by the natural process. The beginning of the season is the time when pullets fetch the highest prices, and it js generally hard work to get a num ber of hens sufficient to hatch at that time of the year the number of chicks required. Moreover, the sitting hen is of a roving nature at the beginning of the season, and very often, when we think she wish es to hatch, and we give her some eggs, she will sit for a few days, and then abandon her nest for per haps only a short time, but pos sibly long enough to ruin the whole hatch. This, of course, is some thing the incubator will not do — or at least I have not heard of any cases. The hen may break the eggs, she may eat thenV sne n\av be dirty, have lice and other dis agreeable vermin: The incubator is free of all these objectionable habits, and is always...

LIKE BEGETS LIKE. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 18 April 1911

LIKE BEGETS LIKE. ?'?.-?.- '.s Great attention .requires to .be , paid to the selection of the breeding stock, as such is responsible for the quality and stamina of the offspring. v ; It is as. well to have impressed upon _..?'-.'; the mind the old saying that 'Like ?.'??'?- ? 'begets like.' In selecting Jhe hens, those should be chosen that have moulted well. There is nothing .like the. moult to test the. physical ' . .- 'strength of a fowl. If the bird is at all weak it either lingers in the moult or succumbs to it. The birds should not have been forced in any. way for the production of eggs, but have been rationally fed. In choos ing the birds a selection of two year-olds should be 'made, ' as un doubtedly the well-matured birds are the most likely to produce vit ality in the offspring. In selecting the male a ? well-matured cockerel should be chosen, and one that has been separated from the opposite sex since his own was determined. So many people 'pay too little at tention to t...

The Poultry Run. EGG TROUBLES. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 18 April 1911

The Poultry Run. EGG TROUBLES. The two great troubles with eggs are soft-shelled or Bhell-less ones, and - _ -- non-fertility: Soft-shelled or shell less eggs are caused mainly by the . hens being overfat, and in other cases by the lack of green food or ' grit. The albumen, the membrane or skin of the egg, and the shell are all formed about the yolk from the time it leaves the ovaries of the hen-, _and reaches the nest. While passing through the oviduct, the yolk is continually 'turned over and over, ;; while gathering and accumulating about itself the coagulation of al bumen or white part of the egg. As - . soon as this is done the outer coat ? of heavier albumen -is laid on. From ?' these the inner and outer membrane of the egg is formed. Finally the deposit of lime or shell is laid on the outer membrane,' If there is sufficient liquid calcine matter in the lower part of the ovi duct there will be a complete shell formed about the egg. If this is lacking, then shell-less eggs will...

FARMERS' UNIONS AND THE WORKERS. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 18 April 1911

FARMERS' UNIONS AND THE WORKERS. Ox Saturday week, the Brookong Farmers' Union made an effort to evoke a discussion on the rural workers' claims. The attendance, in view of the admitted, importance of the subjeot, cannot be alluded to as very satisfactory.. .Possibly the far mers as a whole did* not understand that the meeting- was intended for evevyoue interested in the question. Seeing that the Union again decided to make their next, meeting an open one, it is hoped that the. fanners will remember, that they: are invited to attend whether they are members of the' Union or members of any Union or not. At the last meeting Mr Montgomery made a praiseworthy attempt to provoke discussion 'on the workers' claims but, unfortunately, he was blocked on a side issue, ^arid the meeting could scarcely be said to have fulfilled its ^purpose. There, we s apparently some dread that if the meeting once began to consider details it would take hours. This, it would seem, would be a terrific waste o...

In view of the somewhat start ling figures quoted in this article, it is necessary to state that they are not of a haphazard character, but fully vouched for as authentic by 'Hoade's Dairyman,' one of the reputable journals in America, and from which the following par ticulars are extracted : 'Can a bull whose normal weight is over a ton be a dairy bull? Can he have dairy quality and impart this quality to his descendants? No, say the dairy experts whose education and training are along the lines of the Channel Island breeds. Yes, say the dairymen who are familiar with the appear ance and the quality of the brown '., Swiss breed, -*of which the bull ? .''. « Junker was a prize taker at the re cent Illinois State Fair.
