Hedges and Shelter Belts—II [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 14 March 1896

Hedges and Shelter Belts—II THE plants can be set with the dibble or spade and should be set two inches deeper than they grew in the nursery . The particular points are , to plant firm enough and deep enough , and to be certain that the roots are not too near the surface . Each plant should be critically exaniined , and not one that looks in the least doubtful should be used . It is very desirable to have the row complete , and all vacanlces must be carefully filled with strong , well-formed plants , the succeeding spring , if not done then , it is seldom that you can do it with success afterward . I advise the single row system in all cases . As soon as the plants are set , cultivation should commence , it should be shallow but frequent ; at least once a week through the growing season . Where large screens or wind-breaks are • desired , where plants like the Norway spruce , red cedar , oak or the larch are used , I prefer intervals of from three to five feet . For the smaller grow...

UNKNOWN [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 14 March 1896

r \ That hideous and deathly te— -- \ % -t demon of sickness—constip--tion , is an easy enough thing to cure ii you take the right medicine . Constipation is one of the commonest things in the world . It is really one of the most serious things . Fully nine-tenths of all the ordinary sickness of mankind is due to this one cause . If you place an obstruction in the gutter , it will stop the flow of water , and gradually a mass of poisonous , putrefying matter will accumulate . That is exactly what happens in the digestive organs when constipation begins . Poisonous matter accumulates and is forced into the blood . It goes all over the body and causes all sorts of symptoms . A few of these are dizziness , flatulence , heartburn , palpitation , headaches , loss of appetite , loss of sleep , foul breath , distress after eating , biliousness and eruptions of the skin . These things are unpleasant , but they are not serious . The serious things come afterward . Doctor Pierce s Pleasant Pe...

Experiments on Gophers , Etc [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 14 March 1896

Experiments on Gophers , Etc OUR readers are aware how much stock raisers are indebted to Pasteur for his scientific discoveries ; they haveknown of the anthrax vaccine and of its practical use in various parts of the country to prevent the disease known as black leg . But there comes to us a letter from Dr . Harold Sorby , manager of the Pasteur Anthrax Vaccine Company , stating that he is beginning a series of experiments with a virus prepared at the Pasteur Institute for the purpose of exterminating rats , mice , moles and other rodents . Dr . Sorby further states that he desires to ascertain , by suitable experiments , whether the virus is applicable to the various species of gophers and prairie dogs or squirrels found in the different States and which , in some places , are veritable pests . He proposes , therefore , that the readers of the Farm , Field and Fireside send to him live specimens of these pests . As to manner of sending , and all the business arrangements , he woul...

Looks Smoky [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 14 March 1896

Looks Smoky A GREAT excitement prevailed in Barcelona and in Madrid , Spain , last Sunday , over the action of the United States Senate in voting to recognize the Cuban provisional government , as a belligerent power , and to ask the President to use his good offices with Spain to obtain recognition of Cuban independence . A mob visited the U . S . Consulate in Barcelona and added stones and brickbats to their shouting . First they called out , Long live Spain and Down with the Yankees ; then they began to let fly the missiles and broke some of the windows . The police soon appeared on the scene and drove away the mob . But the excitement was great at the newspaper offices and at other points of gathering . Apparently Spain is ready to go to war because of an imagined insult . But , as a matter of fact , the action of the Senate was no more than most European nations did , thirty years ago , in recognition of the Southern Confederacy . Some of the leading Republicans of Spain declar...

A False Friend [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 14 March 1896

A False Friend THE Farmers Fnend (?) Secretary Morton , is doing his best to carry out his own fool notions , in spite of the action of Congress . As yet no seeds have been purchased for distribution during the coming year . No attempt has been made to prepare for the selection of valuable new varieties , and no seed room has been established nor any corps of clerks and seed-packers trained for the work . The turnip-headed Secretary has given out the information that if he is compelled to send out seeds he will turn the job over to some of the big seedsmen . Thus , instead of being a real benefit to the farmers of the country , it will simply be a plum for the seedsmen , who will thus have an excellent chance to get rid of all their old : back-number seeds . Happily the reign of Morton is approaching its close . Another matter of the gravest importance to the farmers of the West has been botched in the usual disgusting manner by that hopeless incompetent . This is the irrigation que...

Current Topics [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 14 March 1896

Current Topics Signs of spring are appearing in Northern Illinois . Navigation opened on the Illinois River March 9 . The river stood at twelve feet above low-water mark at Lacon . Steamers have begun their regular trips . It was thought that the sugar interests of San Francisco and New York had the ear of the President when Hawaii was seeking to overthrow a corrupt Queen and establish a republic . The sugar kings preferred a monarchy . Kings naturally dislike republics . A new Army bill is before Congress . It was prepared by Secretary Lamont . It proposes an increase in the artillery arm . It is evident that we must have more coast defenses and have them better manned . The infantry force is to be brought up to 16 , 325 sabers and bayonets ; it now numbers 13 , 125 . No increase of the cavalrv arm is contemplated . The artillery service is to be strengthened by the addition of two regiments , each of 500 men . The total increase will be about 4 , 000 . General Weyler has issued a ...
