One of the basic attitudes of Japanese culture that operates in shaping this film is the great significance attached to the visual , the plastic element in art . The Japanese are people of violent emotions which manifest themselves in extravagant gestures . This creates in them a sensitivity to the importance of gesture and an awareness of posture as a language , a virtuosity of facial expression and a tendency to plastic rather than verbal thought , which Kurosawa utilizes to convey his meanings . The third value of classical studies is that the student is trained to communicate his ideas cogently and persuasively . By spending most of his time translating difficult thought-processes from a foreign language into his own , the student develops an ability for effective , selling speech . These three general considerations formed the main substance of Dr . Schorks talk , but I cannot conclude without mentioning two other practical remorks which he made . First , he called attention to the delightfully utilitarian value o...

FROSH ( Continued from Page 1 ) [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 3 November 1960

FROSH ( Continued from Page 1 ) promises are sane and worthwhile ; they are promises which can he kept . Bill Singer sums up his campaign : My hat is not in the ring ; it is firmly on my head . I m not running for president merely to fulfill a lot of promises . As a matter of fact , I m not making any promises . When I am elected , I will do whatever needs doing , and whatever my class wants me to do , within reason . This is all that any candidate for president of the freshman class can say . Al Wiegman says , Let s unite the freshman class into a unit that will lead the whole school . He plans a weekly freshman bulletin to inform every freshman of meetings and activities ; a group of faculty and graduate advisors to aid freshmen in academic and vocational matters ; promotion of school spirit by rallies by the class before freshman and varsity sports events ; and a social calendar for freshman , including a freshman prom and a moonlight ride up the Potomac .
