The greenback folly is still preva lent in Iowa. Five delegates to a state greenback convention met at Des Moines last Tuesday and nomi nated a full state ticket. A Michigan town has a fire depart ment whicb consists of a chief, a wooden pail and a ladder twenty-two feet long. The "devouring element" has decided to take a back seat. Easteku Oregon and Y'asIriiigton journals are not slow in calling at tention to the fact that a free river is a commercial necessity. In a long article in The Dalles Timi-2Toun-talnccr of the lltli, this journal in discussing that question, says: "At the commencement of the era of railroads in Oregon Portland in duced Ben Holladay to grant it espe cial favors in the location of depots to the detriment of other towns. If the O. & C. 1. E. had been built through to Astoria as projected, thousands of dollars would not have been spent annually to allow sea-going vessels to arrive at Portland. But the O. k C. 1. E. only branched out a sufficient distance from that city for it to command the wheat trade of the Willamette, and it left oil' its swaddling clothes aud assumed the importance of a great commercial point.
