•i STORY OF BOER WAR. ACCOUNT BEGINS WITH RAID BY DR. JAMESON. Fall of Two Republics Made Certain Years Later—Boers Force Conflict by Invading Natal—Capture of Cronje— Is Beginning of £he End. The origin of the Anglo-Boer war may be said to date from the Jameson raid of 1896. The details of that as sault on the integrity of the Dutch repub lics in South Africa are yet fresh in the public recollection. Dr. Jameson was a Scotchman residing in Cape Colony and largely Interested with Cecil Rhodes an he it is GEN. CRONJE. subjects in gold and diamond mining. The object of the raid was to over throw the authority of the Transvaal and Orange Free State governments to levy tribute upon the product of the mines. This tribute was regarded as excessive and is still viewed in that light, but as the workers of the mines were deriving immense fortunes from them little hardship was Inflicted. The defeat, of Dr. Jameson's project and his capture restored the status quo for a time. The raider was...

Every Step in the Services Clearly De scribed—Crownine the Queen Consort —The Archbishop of Canterbury Ad ministering the Oath—The Oath—The King'j Champion—The Earl Marshal in Donbt—A Brilliant and Impres sive Scene. The coronation of King Edward VII. will not take place until next June, but active preparations are already being made for the event. The time is none too long, says the London Daily Mail, for the enormous mass of work to be done. England has as yet little idea of the pomp and glory of the coming cere monies. London next June will be the scene of such magnificent pageantry and representation of power and might as will eclipse the glories of the Jubi lee celebrations in 1887 and 1897, and will provide for all who have the privi lege of seeing it a vision of splendor un equaled in recent times. No doubt it is possible to view with some me...

ft, V. 1 1 VIRGINIA, MINN. W. E. HANNAFORD, Publisher. The Scotchman jokes with less difficul ty than the Sultan pays. The more potatoes' are dug up, the more potatoes will go down. We'!, the failure of the lobster crop can't be laid up against the drought. Betting on the America cup racers bids fair to be even faster t'han the yachts. The Chicagoans who propose a rowing rac across Lake Michigan are foolhardy seekers* for notoriety. Boston's park commissioners have put a liiiii upon peanut shells. Why not the heel-disturbing banana skin? It is a subject of remark that Milwau kee's freak yacht is a sloop, although the "schooner" still retains its popularity. Milwaukee is willing to yield the palm for chicken stripping to Chicago if Chi cago will refrain from stripping the oops. The report that Gen. Uribe^Uribe is organizing a filibustering expedition ou the Jersey coast is probably a cunard canard. Minnesota having refused to play foot ball in Milwaukee, Milwaukee knows what she ...

THE VIRGINIA ENTERPRISE VIRGINIA. MINN. W. E. HANNAFORD, Publisher. The "coon" song which led to murder in Indiana must have been as bad as the rest. Now that the war in South Africa is over, the daily surrenders are all from one Perhaps hats of that style are called Panamas because they cost so much more than they're worth. Marconi's invention of a rapid "wire loss" receiver was as necessary as the ability to read one's own writing. And now Prof. Triggs rises to affirm that "culture is a failure." Some of the things which have been sold for culture are. It is Admiral Clark now after having been admirable Clark for a long time, among people who appreciate worth in a naval officer. The Jefferson farmer who was picked up after daring a bull now knows how it feels to be in politics, under certain circumstances. The reported popularity of "rag time" nnisic in Germany is further evidence of the increasing competition of Ameri can manufacturing genius. Now that the steamship combination ...

There was a man whose chief desire Was a Panama hat. He said: "That's what I most require JIs the thing I most admire: I 11 have to beg Or buy or hire Me a Panama hat." Tie envied every man he saw In a Panama hat. He gazed at window shows with awe. And sighed: "They cost a heap, but, pshaw 1 pretty near would break the law For a Panama hat." TORY OF UGAR Is a generic term, having 01ie meaning in chemistry, an other in commerce and still an other in politics. In the slang phrase ology of the day, sugar has supplanted "soap" as the agent which keeps po litical machines greased* and accom plishes many things which tile unini tiated public fails to understand. The suga. of commerce, however, while it has been suspected of mixing in politics, has a more important office than that of a lubricant of the wheels of government. If it sweetens the cup for some of our statesmen it also fills the cup for thousands of toilers, gives scores of thousands of little folks the stomach ache and, in one foi*m or an other, makes America the paradise of dentists. America does not make a very large proportion of the world's supply of raw saccharine matter, but it refines a great deal of it, importing for the purpose something like 2,700, 000,000 pounds annually. While the United States produces only about 000,000,000 pounds of cane sugar...
