A Word to Country Democrats. Noew that the contest for the e)oInimtions for congress in this 'tsate and .Misyis4iplpi are warming ,up,,let the Democratic masses who h~tvea right to control these nomni ntation,s repudiate ariy man who is afraid to deascle his pnrfpose to reduce tariff taxation. We nsubmit the.e` f:icts to the people. Never ,efore in the history of this country has the rate of tariff taxation been as high as it is now. There never was, before, the war a statesman or politician of the slightest conse -quence who favored any tariff ap p.roximating, in its enormities, the present one. The excuse for Ihis traiff was the extraordinary 'expenses entailed by 'the war ; yet 'the war has been over twenty years and the traiff has not been material ly reduced. HIenry :Clay, the author' of the American System. never dreamed of a grinding tariff such as we find so-called Iemocrats now maintaining. Saturday, Sept. 11, 1886. The sweet potato crop of this parish promises to be a good one. We saw a married man the other day on the opposite side of the bayou who did not know what a bodkin was. DMr. J. Henry Putnam has been made foreman of the grand jury, and the citizens of the parish may look for thorough work. We were favored with a light shower of rain last Thursday after. noon. Present indications would lead as to the conclusion that we will soon have more. SThe tirst bale of cotton raised in this psrssh, this year, was by Mr. F. p. Lein and sold to- Mr. Jacob usces, who shipped it to Wise & Beer, New Orleans. Some of the cooks, and other un occupied servants about town are quitting for the cotton picking sea son. Good thing for the cotton growers, but a little heavy on some of the town people. Some of our young m.n are in an earnest spirit about organizing a brass band. They contemplate soon to give an entertainment for its benefit, and it is to be hoped our citizens will...
