jitlttleit fattfg. "THE OLD CHURCHY iR D." [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 8 February 1855

jitlttleit fattfg. "THE OLD CHURCHY iR D." BY JOIiX U. BAZLEY. When fruit* and corn are gathered in ; When forest-trees are bare ; When wintry winds their storms begin, And roar, and rend, and tear ; At evening's close, when men from libor ceasc, Aud all is still, in silence and in peace, Then let me die. And bury me in "the ofd churchyard," In a quiet louely nook, Where the old yew-tree seens keeping guard, And listening to the brook. Ay, bnry me in " the old churchyard," Where many'a friend doth lie, Where the old yew-tree seems keeping guard, And saying, "All must die!" Ay, bury me in " the old churchward," Close by thu old yew-tree, Where the elm aud pine keep watch and ward O'er poor mortality. And when they take me to the grave, Let no vain pomp be phown, No grand array with staff aud stave, No hearties* tear or moan: Bnt let my nearest kin, and those Who loved me as their friend, Follow me to my long rppose. And there their eorrowa blend. Thus would I rest in " the old churdh...

WE PART TO 3IICET AGAI.Y. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 8 February 1855

WE PART TO 3IICET AGAI.Y. PT J. T. SIMMONS. Full many a scone, full many a flower, May yield the bosom some delight, To perish with the passing hour, And leave us back again in uight; But oh ! there is a special joy When parting with the friends we love, The friends whose hearts knows no alloy— To point them to the sky above ; And while the pearjy love-drops swell Front eyas, the heart is free from pain— « For though we whisper " fare thee well," We fool " we part to meet again." We kntw there is above the skies A land " where saints immortal reign," Where every saint on earth who dies Meet friends he ne'er will leave again. And when we meet in that bright land To sing Jehovah's praises o'er, Among tho countless happy band, We'll feel that we Khali part no more. Look up where truth and.virtue dwell, For earthly things arc ever vain; Then thou, when bidding friends farewell, Mayst *\y, " We part to meet again."

litistelliiitMiis. From the >•'. Y. Spirit of tho Times. A SLIPPERY STORY. A ludicrous scene occurred the other day in Anthony street, near where the new theatre is in course of construction, which, if .1 description may convey an adequate impression of it, i 3 well worth the telling. One of the laborers growing thirsty under the Influence of a hot sun, went hastily over to the nearest hydrant for a drink, and clapping his capacious mouth to the spout, imbibed the Oroton just as it came in tho most forcible and plenteous manner Imaginable. Hardly had poor Mike, however, tasted the gushing flood that distended his cheeks, when he started bolt upright, and with a look oi' amazing horror, commenced a series of pantomimic contortions which were absolutely painful to witness. " Ow—ow—ugh!" he groaned convulsively, at tho same time clewing at his throat in a frenzied manner, while he spirted water forth again with the energy of a wounded whale; then'suddenly recovering the use ...

|. Tile Great Plague. I In "Dickens' Child's History of England," Vol In ''Dickens Child s History of England, vol. I 2, we find tho following respecting the Great Plague that prevailed in the seventeenth century in khe city of London : " For this was the year and the time of the Great Plague in London. During the winter of 1664, it had been whispered about that some people had died here and there of disease called the Plague, in some of the unwholesome suburbs of London. News was not published at that time as it is now, and some people believed these rumors and some disbelieved them, and they weep soon forgotten.— But in the month of May, IOGo, it began to be said all over the town that the disease had burst out in St. Giles and that the people were dying in great numbers. This soon turned out to be awfully true. Tho roads of London were choked up by people endeavoring to escape from the infected city, and large suras were paid for any kind of Conveyance. The disease soon spread so...

The Grnpe Product and Culture. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 15 February 1855

The Grnpe Product and Culture. Cor> Sht, TIICR>I>AV, FF.URVABY 15, 1835. The olimate and soil of a large portion of California affords unequalled facilities for the cultivation of the grape, but more especially the southern counties.
