THE HEAD AND THE HEART. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Transcript — 27 July 1850

THE HEAD AND THE HEART. Here is a beautiful thing from the pen of Mrs. Cornwall Wilson : " Please, my lady, buy a nosegay, or bestow a trifle," was the address of a pale, emaciated woman, holding a few withered flowers in her hand, to a lady who sat on the bench at Brighton, watching the blue waves of the receding tide. " I have no pence, my good woman," said the lady, looking up from the novel she was perusing with a listless gaze ; " if I had, I would give them to you." • " I am a poor widow, with threi? helpless children depending upon me; would you bestow a small trifle to help us on our way ?" " I have no half-pence," reiterated the lady somewhat pettishly. " Really," she added, as the poor applicant turned meekly away, " this is worse than the streets of London ; they should have a police on the shore to prevent annoyance." They were the thoughtless dictates of the head. " Mamma," said a blue-eyed boy, who was playing on the beach at the lady's feet, flinging pebbles into the ...

Steamer I'apcr. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Transcript — 27 July 1850

Steamer I'apcr. On Monday morning next we shall issue for circulation in the United States another edition of the Sacramento Transcript, in the same form as heretofore. It will be the most interesting number that has appeared, containing a great variety of matter that will be of the most exciting character to the world abroad. The past month has been lull of events. We have had to chronicle in that time the first intelligence of the long train of emigrants ou their way to this country overland. Gold has been discovered on the east side of the Sierra Nevada, and a new current of enterprise is setting that way. A commercial crisis has been predicted, but the time for its fulfilment has gone past, and we are still pursuing the high road to greatness. The free circulation ot our newspapers in foreign countries will correct the false impressions that have obtained among many. We shall make it our first object to give a true and substantial account of the state of the country, and in orde...

City Physician. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Transcript — 27 July 1850

City Physician. Legislation of the City Council — Its Er-> rors — The Necessity of Reform — No 3. In an attiele on the second clause of our text, we adverted in general t rms to the leading features of legislative action in the City Council. It now becomes our duty to particularize many of the measures of that body, and apply the dissecting knife thereto. We dislike the duty, because in its performance the motives and interests of particular members necessarily comes in severe review. We know the task of the reformer is a hard one, especially in California ; but a self-sacrificing victim must throw himself in the breach; and we will not hesitate, relying on a stout heart and a sound conscience as our armor. Before entering on the task, we will refer to another feature in public action, having an important influence in moulding public opinion. The general tenor and drift of our remarks heretofore has been to arouse the people to a due sense of their own rights and position...
