HSU romance from 1918 by Kristi Cargill Staff Writer It was the fall o'f 1918. The set- ting: Simmons College. Girls finally had the opportunity to attend college with boys. It truly was the dawning of co-educational schools and progress to come. As you will see back then things were quite different for my friend Ms. Era Skaggs. Her college experi- ence was flavored with things such as special uniforms stict dormitory par- ents and carriage rides. As she related girls had to wear a dark blue suit and hat when they went off campus. This uniform relayed that they were Simmon's girls. However as old-fashioned as her story may appear it still holds modern college potential. She told me of adventurous rumors of romance and it seems students back then could teach us a few things in creativity. Back in 1918 the girls were kept in line by the watchful dormitory par- ents. Ms. Skaggs said the parents were very strict. They made sure that the girls did not stay out late and I would assume the...

Servant's Piercing challeges students to "be real" by Laura Hammack Staff Writer Photographer God's love is shown through many people in very different ways. A small group of Hardin- Simmons students express God's love and merciful- ness through music. Kyle Scaggs Andrew Autrey and Clay and Paul Corder are the foursome that make up the local band Servant's Piercing. "The group has had the opportunity to tell peo- ple through our music in a powerful way what Jesus can do in their lives" Scaggs said. The band began in August of 1996 with four guys and a lot of faith. Although two of the original members have been called to do other things for Christ Servant's Piercing is still spreading the word of God through their music. The band has developed a separation of duties as Scaggs guitar and singer stepped our as the unoffical leader while Autrey drummer is said to be the comic relief. He also handles the artistic aspect of the band. Paul Corder singer and guitar took on the job as the p...

Viewers "Hunting" for thoughtful drama won't be dissapointed by Bryan Tuck Staff Writer Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's screenplay for Good Will Hunting has already won a Golden Globe and it is sure to be nominated for an Oscar. The reason is that it's a really good script with a thoughtful story and rich (if a little colorful) dialogue. Damon stars as Will Hunting a young man with a brilliant mind but a somewhat unwilling spirit. Will has been in and out of foster homes and juvenile detention and has by most standards wasted his knowledge working as a janitor at MIT. He spends most of his free time getting into trouble with his friends Chuckie (Affleck) Morgan (Casey Affleck) and Billy (Cole Hauser). After a fistfight Will is given a jail sentence with one chance of pro- bation: he must meet weekly with Dr. Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard) an MIT professor to hone his skills. He must also meet with a therapist. Will suc- ceeds in insulting and enraging sever al candidates for this position...

HSU netters looking good by Chad English Staff Writer With another men's and women's tennis season getting under- way Hardin-Simmons University's Coach Drake feels very good about both his teams' chances. The girls are coming off a conference victory from last year while the men had a second place finish in 1996-97 conference action. Coach Drake feels both teams are stronger and should be in the run- ning for American Southwest Conference crowns. "Our biggest competition in con- ference for the women should be cross-town rival McMurry and Howard Payne with the men likely having tough battles against Howard Payne" said Coach Drake. In the 1997-98 Men's Division III South Preseason Rankings the Cowboys showed up in the 1 1th spot. The preseason polls for the Cowgirls have not yet come out. In singles play HSU sophomore Dustin Ogelsby is ranked an impres- sive sixth in the South region and 25th in the National Division HI Rankings. "Ogelsby has a great shot as an individual entry for t...

Also on the line for the Cowgirls is an elite spot in the national playoff picture. With an overall record of 14- 6 (7-2 in ASC play) the Cowgirls remain as one of the top six teams in the southern region of NCAA Division III basketball. With only one more loss playoff hopes for this year's team will dwin- dle drastically if they are not devastat- ed altogether. Coming off a mid-season slide the Cowgirls are aiming to finish up strong and with some help capture an ASC championship. Presently the Cowgirls are sec- ond in the conference. Mississippi College now holds the number one spot with a stunning record of 1 8-0 (8- 0 in ASC play). Beanie Babies bring "virtual headaches" by Richard Bone Staff Writer Recently while I was trying to complete a paper in the Hardin- Simmons library I fell prey to a com- puter virus. This virus destroyed my paper as well as disrupted the entire computer network. I was extremely distraught over the loss of my paper. So I did what any red-blooded American man would do -1 took mat- ters into my own hands. Okay well not really. I did it the new American way: I let somebody else take my matters into their own hands. I mean come on I know about as much about computers as Hillary Rodham Clinton knows about a little procedure we like to call divorce. So at this point a kind and high- ly enigmatic local computer whiz came to my rescue. I was expecting the worst. I had heard many computer virus horror stories. My horror story is no different. I soon found out my disk was laced with a southeastern strain of the Ebola computer virus. I believe that the Federal Bureau of Investigations now has c...

Maturity art of tact take patience and energy by Penny Bivens Staff Writer A family member related the following story to me the other day which made me stop and think about how our words and actions can so easily inflict painful wounds on others. In Sunday School one recent morning she had requesting prayer for a painful back condition. The Sunday School teacher seemingly without reason suddenly said "Well we all have prob- lems" and dismissed my family member's request . Needless to say my hmhbbhhhbs family member was stunned and wounded and still does not understand why this woman would say such a mean-spirited thing. igTgilaBTOtHDHbi?Kl BSM has busy semester by Erin Allen Staff Writer This Spring Break 30 mem- bers of Baptist Student Ministry will travel to Laredo Texas on their annual mission trip. The purpose of this trip will be to help Debbie Keller with campus outreach in Laredo. Keller a graduate of HSU is the BSM director at Laredo Community College and Texas A&M International. Laredo Community College is made up of about 10000 stu- dents who are mostly commuters which makes it difficult to find people interested in BSM. HSU students will have brown-bag lunches and will spread out around campus and meet students and tell them about what BSM has to offer. They hope to leave Debbie some prospects to work with. The students on the trip will stay at La Primera Bautista. In addition to campus outreach they will do some work and make improvements on the churches facilities. They will visit three other churches on a one-time basis and lead worship services. The Love Company represented by fi...

Leuders church pastor changed in heat of ministry by Kathy Maxwell Editor in Chief It was the middle of the night the day after Christmas 1996 when a pounding at the door brought Mark Chadwick running and the message chilled his heart. "The church is on fire!" "Nothing has ever made me feel so helpless" said Leuders pastor Chadwick "as seeing flames shooting out of the church." The small volunteer fire depart- ment did everything it could to save the church said Chadwick. Chadwick worked beside them coming in and' out of the burning building until he was rushed to the emergency room because of smoke inhalation. "When I saw the steeple fall through the roof" Chadwick remembered "my heart fell with it." Ministry according to Chadwick is always a lot of hard work. "You have to step out on faith" he said "and you're not quite sure where God's taking you. But you know he's taking you." The burning of the Leuders church was only the beginning of the HSU Harlaxton student writes of storybo...

Vitamins can give needed health energy boost by Kristi Cargill Staff Writer What is your first reaction when someone asks you "how you are?" If it centers around being tired then your diet might be in need of a jump- start. Dr. Gary Stanlake Hardin- Simmons' professor of nutrition shared a few comments. He said "It is best to eat a well-balanced mean via food intake. If you have a concern that you may not be getting proper nutri- tion then vitamin supplements would benefit you." However today's processed foods may mislead us. According to Dr. Albert Kincheloe D.O. some food processess destroy vitamins. He explained "Since everybody eats processed foods today instead of home-grown a lot of the trace ele- ments are destroyed and not adequate- ly fortified." Such is true of concentrated orange juice. Kincheloe says that orange juice from concentrate actual- ly has lost most of its vitamin C. Fresh-squeezed orange juice on the other hand retains more vitamin C. In particular vitamin C h...

Top ten movies of 1997 judged by personal opinion & by Bryan Tuck Staff Writer Here are in my own humble opinion the 10 best movies of 1997. Please keep in mind that I haven't seen every film that came out last year and that all this really boils down to personal opinion. I've tried to judge these films by what they were and for "critical" worth but again it really just comes down to how much I enjoyed them. Here goes. 10. Donnie Brasco: This true story of a federal agent infiltrating the mob captivates the viewer and is one of the best films about the Mafia since the Godfather series. Johnny Depp and Al Pacino deliver terrific perfor- mances. Compelling. 9. Gatlaca: This fascinating tale of genetic engineering versus the human spirit will reward the thoughtful view- er with much on which to ponder. Intelligently written and hypnotically shot Gattaca is one of the finest hard sci-fi films of the last several years. 8. As Good as it Gets: James L. Brooks's witty romantic comedy i...

Dark City proves to be impressive science fiction by Bryan Tuck Staff Writer 12 stars out of possible four Dark City is a visual wonder. From the impressive Blade Runner- like sets to the imaginative special effects it's worth seeing for the tech- nical aspects alone. There is more to it than that though. Personally I really like this kind of intellectual sci-fi. True it's not quite up to the level of say 2001 or the aforementioned Blade Runner but it shows that its creators have tried to make something of some substance. For the most part they have succeed- ed. The city of the title is just that; the sun apparently never shines. The story begins as John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) wakes up in a hotel bathtub with no idea how he got there who the mutilated body on the floor next to him belonged to or who he is. A mys terious phone call warns him that "they" are coming and Murdoch decides it would be a good idea to vacate the premises. Apparently a series of murders has been taking place ...

HMfmesnm! IMJIIH1 Junior John Joslin swings game-winning bat by Chad English Staff Writer Hardin-Simmons junior John Joslin hit a big three-run homer to lift the Cowboys past Mississippi College last Saturday for a 10-7 ASC conference victory. Joslin's home run ended the longest game in the 67 season history of HSU baseball. This game's ending hit came in a two-out bottom of the 15th inning situation at Hunter Field. Ray Quick a sophomore hurler got the win after pitching 143 pitches in II innings of relief. Quick allowed 1 1 hits and shut down the Choctaws after giving up two runs in the sixth. "Ray did a great job of getting himself out of some real sticky situations in this game. He kept us in it and gave us the chance to win" said senior second baseman Robbie Schwab. Joslin went four for six with three runs bat- ted in and teammate Lane Brannan also went four for six with two RBI. "We had a lot of solid hits in this game and in the bottom of the ninth we got in a hole but strung...

V-. Cowgirl basketball team seizes ASC championship by Foy Meyer After another winter's worth of thrilling victories the Cowgirls of Hardin-Simmons University had to face the sad conclusion to this basket- ball season. The playoff hopes of this year's squad of Cowgirls came to a surprising halt as they failed to be voted in as one of the top six teams in the southern region of NCAA division III basketball. Despite the somewhat premature close to an extremely successful sea- son the Cowgirls did capture an ASC conference championship with a dra- matic win against the lady Choctaws of Mississippi College. After a con- vincing 81-69 victory the Cowgirls managed to reserve a spot atop the ASC. Tying the Cowgirls for first place in the conference was Austin College and Mississippi College. Austin College was the only team in the conference to be invited to the playoffs. The Cowgirls' game against Mississippi College was nothing short of a major upset. The lady Choctaws who defeated HSU 7...

Cowboys lose close thriller to Mississippi College by Foy Meyer Staff Writer On the final day of March the 1997 Hardin-Simmons Cowboys took the court for one last time. It was the intent of these Cowboys to topple the highly touted Choctaws of Mississippi College. In a gymnasium that shook with emotion one could easily believe that the Cowboys were capable of doing anything. With home court advantage and a great deal of confidence the Cowboys nearly pulled off an enormous upset. The Cowboys (16-9 8-6 in ASC play) entered the game against Mississippi College (23-2 13-1 in ASC play) without the need of any major impli- cations. For the Cowboys it was all about pride. The first half of this game was riddled with violence. Senior guard Daron Scott could have been better recognized on the football field after receiving a foul for literally tossing an opposing Choctaw to the hard wood floor of the Mabee Complex. On another occasion Scott drove through the lane like a full back on the goal...

Is persecution for the faith closer than we think? In a far off land (not so far as we would like to think) a man is blind- folded and handcuffed. He is beaten with sticks fists and whips and kicked. He couldn't use the toilet or fight back but just stood there for three days and nights. Idris Nalos of Sudan endured this for the name of Christ. He pastors a church in Southern Sudan. That is his crime 1 Prayer may seem like a small thing but prayer with faith that an Almighty God hears and will act is never small. We should approach prayer for the world as we would a football game or a full-scale war. Prayer is not the preparation for battle however. It is the battle and we must enter into this battle with every- thing we have on behalf of those who are persecuted for the sake of Christ. God is the same there as he is here and those people need him every bit as much as we do. So pray as you read these accounts of your brothers and sisters who are suffering. In India 10 Christian evan...

Credit repair not impossible task Newspapers radio TV and the Internet are filled with ads that offer for a fee to erase accurate negative information in your cred- it file so you can get a credit card auto loan home mortgage or even a job. The scam artists who run these ads can't deliver. Only time a deliberate effort and a personal debt repayment plan will improve your credit. The companies that advertise credit repair services appeal to consumers with poor credit histo- ries. Not only can they not provide you with a clean credit record they may be encouraging you to violate federal law. If they ask you to make false statements on a loan or credit application misrepresent your Social Security number or advise you to get an Employer Identification Number from the Internal Revenue Service under false pretenses you will be com- mitting fraud. The truth is you can help yourself to re-build a better credit record. Start by contacting your creditors when you realize that you are unable ...
