Don Hallum According (o U.S. Comp- troller Gen- eral David M. Walker, the greater problem is Medicare. Walker wrote a letter in response to an article that appeared in the Retirement Counseling newsletter, published >y the Society of Financial Service 'rofessionals. This month's newsletter published his writings with the title, "Facing Facts about America's and American's Financial Future. Walker stated, "the greatest chal- lenge to retirement security is not Social Security, it is health care. Obviously, more and more baby boomers will be relying solely on Medicare and Medicaid to meet their health care needs in retirement." "Medicare is in far worse finan- cial shape than S...

Equestrian Wylie teen to compete in national dressage competition By Janice Mauren Without ever chasing a calf or throwing a rope, a Wylie teen shows you don't have to be a cowboy to be a top rider from Texas. Rachel Campbell, a 17-year-old senior at Allen High School, has. qualified to compete nationally in the 2006 United States Equestrian Federation National Junior Team Championship. Only the top 12 dres- sage riders in the U.S. are invited to compete in this championship that will be held in Pebble Beach, Calif., this month. "It's great to have a rider from Texas representing the young dres- sage riders nationally," said Kai Handt, owner and head trainer at North Texas Equestrian Center in Wylie. Handt, who has coached Campbell for the past four years, said it shows that Texas has top riders in all disci- plines, not just cowboys. "My hope is that Rachel continues to perform as well at the national level as she has done throughout the year, at 110 percent," he said. After applic...

"It helps prevent a lot of injuries," Burrow said. "That helps out tremendously." Besides getting students into good physical shape, the offseason program also reinforces a "team" atmosphere. Burrow said. "You're more physically pre- pared, and you have more team chemistry," he said. Sanders agrees, adding that stu- dent-athletes also develop disci- pline by attending the sessions. "It shows commitment," he said. "All of it is voluntary, so they're doing it on their own." As for the physical benefits, Wallace is convinced she'll see them this fall. "I'm sore a lot, so I know it's going to pay off," she said. Daniel Fails tosses a medicine ball during a morning drill at .Sachse High School. "I fell in love with it," said Witt, who has orally committed to play for the Cornhuskers. "It really felt like the right school for me." Witt, who has yet to take a regu- lar season snap for the Pirates, was already on the college scouts' radar before he and his family moved to Texas from Georgia. Including Nebraska, the senior had received scholarship offers from Texas Tech, Purdue, Wisconsin, Baylor, Tulane, UTEP and Tulsa. Oral commitments are non-binding, and recruits cannot officially sign a letter-of-intent until "I want to prepare for the next level if it presents itself. You can tell the coaches are brilliant, and I trust them in turni...
