MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.   A meeting of the above Council was held at   the Council Chambers on the 4th instant. ; Present :—The Mayor (Mr. R. A. Kingsford), Aldermen Ryan, Street, Rodda, Taylor,   Wimble, and M'Kay.     The minutes of the previous meeting hav- ing been read, Alderman M'Kay said before they were confirmed he would like to point out the irregular manner in which the Town Clerk had been elected, it being usual to call for tenders for the office, which had not been done, greatly to the dissatisfaction of the ratepayers. Alderman Wimble said that although it might be usual to call for ten- ders before the election of officers, it was perfectly legal to elect them without doing so. Conns. POLICE COUKT. August 7. (Before E. T. Hartley and R. A. Kingsford, Esqs., J.P.'s) John Cussen, charged with using obscene language, pleaded guilty, and was fined £3, or seven days. Police v. B. Paris.-Defendant was sum- moned on a charge of supplying liquor to Pacific Islanders, and pleaded not guilty. After evidence had been taken the case was dismissed. Augu?t 8. Police v.
