Socialism and the Churches. [CONTRIBUTED.] [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 23 October 1909

Socialism and the Churches. [Contributed. J Mr Watson (when Leader of the Federal labour Party), Mr McGowan (Leader of the state Labour Party) and Mr. Fisher (present Leader of the Federal Labour Party) have in their turn endeav oured to persuade the people that the Ivabour cause and the teachings of Christ are identical. This is an unworthy dodge to catch votes by using the sacred cause of religion for political party pur poses ; for the Ivabour Press in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia have agreed in the expression of sentiments which . are in direct antagonism to Christian doctrines, whilst some of the proposals of the Ivabour pro gramme are of the most un-Christian character. Listen to the following examples: — 'Whether a man worships a portion of his wood heap, or goes in for hard-husk Baptist proceeding, or laughs at the whole yowling zoo of prophets ; . . and apostles and saints, troubles the Ivabour Party less than the colour of Satan's boots — for t...

The Message in the Bouquet. Dick Rich-aMsoir lay in bed,' He. was in a half dreamy state, and the events .of the past six years kept occurring to his mind. Lecture at the School of Arts. [Newspaper Article] — The Blue Mountain Echo — 23 October 1909

Lecture at the School of Arts. Dr. Morris's lecture at the School of Arts on Friday evening last on ' l Striking Adap tations from Nature ' ' was one of those in teresting topics which should have com manded an overflowing house, but which was unfortunately very poorly attended. Ihis is to be regretted, inasmuch as the School of Arts Committee are doing their utmost to, induce a number of prominent and well-known lecturers to come here, and the hearty and united support of the mem bers of. the Institution should be freely given. A poor house acts like a wet blan ket to a man who has a subject to handle which is both interesting and instructive, and most men find it difficult to rise to the occassiou. Dr., Morris could not but feel the effects of empty chairs, but it redounds to his credit that he for the time being for got that fact and entered upon his subject as if a large audience was before him. His lecture dealt with many of the mysteries and marvels of Nature, the wonderful me...

Town Hal! Inquiry. ? ?On Monday afternoon last ah inquiry was, held in the Katoomba Council Chambers before Janies Smith Mollison, Ksq., officer appointed by the Government, into the question of the proposed, erection of a Town' Plall and Council Chambers for Katoomba, and the proposal to borrow ^,3000 from private persons for that purpose. The meeting was largely attended by the Aldermen and rate payers, and a large amount of evidence was given. The Mayor, Aid. G.James, called evidence in favor of the propasal, and Mr. A. J. Craig in opposition. Aid. James first gave evidence. He said there was no doubt it was very necessary for the welfare of the town to have a Town Hall and Chambers erected, the present hall being in such a dilapi dated state. For the past ten years private enter prise had promised a hall, but still they were no nearer its attainment. The Council required Chambers for their own use, and it was decided to anply to the Government for permission to borrow ^'3000 to ...
