LITHGOW STRIKE. At 7.30 a jjublic meeting was held in the Accident i Fund -Hall in connection with the Litbgow strike ! fund. There were present: Messrs. Hunt and | I Magna (ohairman and secretary), and a well I attended and enthusiastic meeting. | The minutes of the previous meeting were read I and confirmed, after which correspondence was read - from tho Secretary of the Lithgow strikers, acknow ledging tlio receipt of money sent, and thanking' i tho miners of Bodangora for the very generous stand they had taken. Fitzsimmons was charged, on remand, with stealing sheep skins, the property of someone unknown, near Stuart Town, lie was alto bbarged with stealing one sheep the property of Michael Brady. ? As no evidchco was offered by the police, - the accused was discharged. He was then charged with stoaling 8 sheep skins at or'near Farnham. ' , ? . Senr. Sergeant Shillingtcn prosecuted. TIiib Uses and Abuses of Public Hospitals. wo navo received a pamphlet with tbo above title from the author, Mr. L. Bruck. The writer is well-known to the. medical profession, and also to the. publio, so that.anything from his pen commands respect. Ho complains bitterly of the abuse of tho public hospitals'of tho eolony, by persons who should employ doctors outside ? hospitals ; and shows how the regular practitionor is unfairly treated in con sequence. .. There are 120 publio hospitals in this colony, — that is, one for every 11,219 persons — and there are 2735 beds available, but onlv a dailv average used of 1892. The number of in-patients treated is 23,259 ; and out-patients, 68,353. Male patie'nts number 76 per cent., and female 24 per cent. These aro attended to by 915 doctors, paid and honorary, ? whoso salaries amount to £G0,295, being an average por doctor of £65 17s lid.
