American Seed Maize. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 7 October 1893

1 American See& Maiae. The following description of Aflieri ?can seed maize recently introduced by the proprietor of the Northern Star i(Lismere) will bo of interest to those who have obtained parcels for planting. We have been several times asked what part of America it comes from. . It may be information, to others, to .state that it conies from Messrs. W, AtlflR IRnrnnn nni? f)n n. Philorlfilnhifl £rm of wide repute, whose seed farm, Ford hook, near Philadelphia, is in one ?of the finest sections in that famous State. On this occasion, as previously, I Messrs. Burpee and Co. hare given .every satisfaction in the execution of, -our order, and we wish some of our | .colonial firms could have seen the manner these goods were packed, al though only making a small order. On their catalogue they make a con spicuous point of ' Burpee's seed grow.' iney couia naa, 'A. customer once .obtained will never elsewhere go.' In one season they tested 3000 varieties ?of vegetables, and 12...

Eaglisli Societr. ? Writing In lliePAtr. Mam Magazisb for July, on English Society, Lady. Jebne ' concludes her atticle witli a prophecy of things to come : — Taxation is incrnasing, -rents are falling, and the foreigner has robura the English inventor of his earnings ; on every hand the demands of the ?working classes for higher wages and 1 shorter hours are louder, and among | the anasses, in whose hands is the government of the country, the fueling is fast gaining ground, that of what j the rich have they should gi?t their 1 share. These are the facts we have to face, and the crisis has to lie tided over; and it cun only be overcome in one way, and that is Iiy a reduction in individual expenditure and a general lowering of the standard of luxury and style of living which now prevails. Messrs. John McArthur & Son. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 14 October 1893

Messrs. John McArthur 6s Son. Many persons will regret to learn that adverse circumstances have compelled the abovenaraed firm to assign their estate. The senior partner is well known on the South Coast as one of the pioneers here in mercantile affairs, and any reference now to the extensive business which he carried on in this district for many years past, first at Terara, and of late years in the commodious premises, Berry-street, Nowra, would be superfluous. There are probably few men in the colony who have had to do with more local enterprises than has Mr. John McArthur. Fifteen or twenty years he placed large sums of money to the aid of various projects out side his store business, but though he succeeded for a time, and in not a few instances afforded material assistance to many struggling men, it happened that in almost all the undertakings he suffered financially and in the end was a heavy loser. His large general store business, however, always stood by him, and with commen...
