WIVES WON BY CHANCE. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 22 July 1914

WIVES WON BY CHANCE. Some of the strangest, roads leading to the altar are the "wife contests," in which the wife is won entirely by chance, and where Cupid has little to do with the subsequent marriage cere mony. One of the oddest of these contests took place recently in Italy. A weal thy Neapolitan, named Tesino, offered his name and lortune to the young wo man who could best please his palate by her cooking of macaroni. As Te sino was goo'l-loolting and rich, and as there were many unmarried girls in Italy, there were over 150 entrants. Tesino tasted the dishes of macaroni that were presented to him, and then carefully looked over the contestants. He subsequently led one to the altar, and gave her a wedding present of £800. Miss Elizabeth Magie, a young Ame rican girl, started to raffle herself as a "slave for life' 'at so much a chance,, the highest-priced chances being £8, in order to get money for voice cul ture. But before the contest was com pleted a suitable suitor presente...

THE TERROR OF THE UNKNOWN. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 22 July 1914

THE TERROR OF THE UNKNOWN. "Utter bewilderment and astonish ment were my first feelings when sight was given to me," said a man who had never seen uniil he was 130 years old. "The bandage was drawn away from my eyes in the hospital. What I saw frightened me; it was so big, and caused such strange emotions. I called out in terror and put out my hand. My fingers touched my nurse's face. I knew she was there, for she had just talcen the bandage from my eyes, and I knew what I was touching, but I did not know what it was I saw. " 'For mercy's sake, what is . it?' j I asked in agonising tones. "The nurse answered me soothing ly, taking my fingers in lier hand and moving them from her mouth to her eyes, to her nose, chin, and forehead. 'It is my face that you see. Look! You know this is my mouth—my chin, and these are my eyes.' "Soon I knew that I was seeing what was familiar to the touch of my fingers —a human face. But the sensation for long was one of terror. The first meal I ate was a...

No Nice Things Now. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 22 July 1914

No Nice Things Now. .Amsley got up to get his pipe from the mantelpiece the other evening, and carelessly brought his foot down on his wife's tender corn. He made no r.pulogy, and Mrs. Amsley said: "Well. Henry Amsley?" "Well, what?" "You haven't anything to say, have you?" ''Anything to say about what?" "At out nearly crushing my foot to a jf'tv." ' What should I say?" "I'd ask, if I were you, Henry Ams ley! What would you have said ten years ago, before we were married, when you were courting me? What would you say to-day to any woman who did not happen to be so fortun ate as to be your wife? Hey? Why, you'd humble yourself in the dirt and apologise to her! You'd say, 'I beg your pardon' and 'How awkward I am' and 'Do excuse me!' Oh, you couldn't be humble and polite enough in your apologies! My! how you would apolo gise! You'd be apt to write her a note about it! And if it had happened after our engagement, you'd be so temlerly solicitous about my 'poor dear little foot,' my tend...
