Our Open Column. GREGRA-COWRA RAILWAY v. CARGO-ROAD-COWEA RAILWAY (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 24 May 1901

Our Open Column. GREGRA-COWRA RAILWAY CARGO-ROAD-COWRA RAILWAY, (To tho Editor.) Sir. — Since writing you last week re the above rival routes of proposed rail way I have had placed in my hand a leaflet; or as my friend termed it a 'dodger,' emanating from the ' Leader ' office Orange. My friend's term, ' dodger,' seems very appropriate, for on studying the matter contained therein, I find this. — ' Enough mistakes have been made in the matter of colonial railways, and it behoves the powers that be to weigh every point before involving us in the expenses of any new lino.' Quite so. I agrbe with dodger ' there, and if it was not for the greed of Orange, and tho district, which ' dodger ' writes so effusively of, we of Canowindra would not to-day be agitating for a rail way but would have had one at our door, for a more glariug mistake than the Molong-Forbes line, through that beauti ful ' Porcupino ' country cannot be found in the colony. Forbes should have boen connected from Woodsto...

Nyrang Creek. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 24 May 1901

Kyrans Creek. (From our Correspondent.) The aunual meeting of tho Nyraug ^reok Cricket Club was held at the resi ionco of Mr. W. JoneB on Saturday ^veiling, May 18th. Owing to two Hatches only being played during the oason it was decided that 110 trophies snouiu oo presenieu. jur. w.JCiinourn had on both occasions played well, and assisted materially in gaining a most de cided victory for the club on the occasion of their match against Canowindra. Though the holding of the. annual ball was discussed, it was not decided as to whether the club would bold it this year. Tho weir on Nyraug Creak at present in course of construction under the man agement of Mr. Granston. will prove of great value to local residents during dry seasons. Tho weather continues dry, and 'Jack Frost ' is putting in an appearance almost every morning. The farmers are commencing to wish for more rain to keep the ground soft for ploughing. It has transpired that Mr. Jas. Rue, who has been seriously ill for somo ti...

Cowra-Gregra Railway. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 24 May 1901

Cowra-Gregra Railway. It is pleasing to note that Government has at lasit been induced to take action tending towards tho fulfillment of tho rromise of the Hon. Minister for Works, I W. E. O'Sr'^Vjn, made tp the residents of the district of Canowindra, Cranbury, Lockwoed, udtil, and Gregra, tha* a ligh- line of railway would be constructed through these districts. The first step, that of inspection, was carried out by Mr. A. McDonald Stewart, an ofitoer in structed to report on the routes sub mitted by the various railway leagues. On Friday morning last this gentleman arrived at Gregra on the Forbes-Orange line, the point from which his inspection was to commonce, that point being the one of connection with the Forbes Orange line proposed by tho combined leagues of the districts before mentioned. Fpon arrival Mr. Stewart was received by representatives of the leagues of Cargo, Cudal, Cranbury, and Canowin dra. The Cargo representatives first interviewed the officer, and tho outcome ...

Our Town Well. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 24 May 1901

Our Town Well. The question of a new town well some time ago agitated the public mind of Canowindra to an extent almost pitiabla to see, and the Government, in iis parental solicitude, after full enquiry as to its necessity, ficquioscau to their request that ono should bo provided. Plans and specifications were drawn up and tenders let for the sinking of a new well, the erection of windmill and tanks, ctc. This work was under the directorship ol i Mr. Engineer Sutter, of Forbes, aud the result reflects but little oredit upon that gentleman. As an ornament the work is undoubtedly not a failure, and looks very pretty in a photograph recenth I taken, but there its value to the township ends. The well itself, wo understand, | is about 1 9ft deep, and. is said to ' give a i splendid supply of water. This is, how over, as it may be, as it has never yet been tested to any extent. The mill is supposed to.be continually working, an overflow pipe being connected with tho tanks eroctod which i...
