SOUTH WARRAGUL. (FRoM OUR OWN COaRESPODENT.) On Tuesday last the parents and friends of the children attending the state school here, assembled at the school for the purpose of being pre sent at the distribution of prizes to the scholars. The Rev. H. Howard presided, and after giving out the prizes, made a vigorous speech in which he urged on the children the necessity of availing themselves of the many educational advamtages which had been placed within their reach, and of thus laying down a sure founda tion while they were young, the bene fits of which they would reap in after life. MIr. Howard further said he had, on behalf of tic friends of Mr. Brent, who was on the point of leaving the district, to present him' ith a slight recognition of their appreciation of the able manner in which he had per formed his duties, and as a mark of their personal esteem. for hinim They were all very sorrythat he was about to leave them, and he knew there were many in othsr parts of the' district...

MORE TROUBLE IN IRELAND. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 20 October 1881

MORE TROUBLE IN IRELAND,. In another column we republish an article from the Argus on the Irish Land Act, and the events of the past week, as conveyed to us by telegrams in the Melbourne papers (copies of some of which will be found below), show how much better it would have been if the Act had been accorded a fair trial. The inflammatory speeches of some of the more prominent mem bers of the Land League have roused the people to a state of intense excite ment, and the Gvernument has con sequently caused several arrests to be made. The whole of Ireland has been proclaimed as under the provisions of the Coercion Act, and the Government has determined to take decisive means for the suppression of the Land League. Amongst those arrested are several members of Parliament be longing to the Home Rule party. The following are the telegrams referred to, which were dated 15th and 16th October: In consequence of the threatening state of Ireland, owing to the arrest of Mr. Parnell and other me...

But the national life in military affairs, as in civil; nas been in no way affected by the pros pect of a collision with a great European Power. Throughout the whole couintri the examinations for appointments in the army have been conducted in precisely the same manner as they were hundreds of years ago, and the successful candi dates are youths who have succeeded in...
