CHAPTER II. AT CLEOPATRA'S NEEDLE [Newspaper Article] — The Advertiser — 8 October 1931

CHAPTER n. ATV CLEOPATRA'S NEEDLE Bill Kellaway emerged from the j editorial office of tha 'Daily Bulletin,' J and the jauminess with which he hac j entered dropped from him like a cloak. Dusk had fallen, and a chill wind blew up from the river. Bill Keliaway shivered. Sutcliffe's parting words, with their stereotyped kindness, still echoed — 'Sorry, old man. Absolutely no vacancy at the moment. Leave your address.' Sut cliffe was the news editor of the 'Bul- letin' — a good fellow, but ? 'The Street of Peradyenture.' he murmured, with an ironic glance at the blazing liguts in a score of news paper offices. He turned and strode almost briskly towards the Temple, fingering the milled edge of his last sixpence. I An awkward coin, thought Keliaway. j tantalising in its inadequacy. Had it been half a crown, or even a shil ling, he could have managed a bed at Rowton House, and perhaps a sausage roll at a coffee stall. He turned down Villiers-street to wards the Embankment. The lights glo...

BARRIERS RALLY After An Early Setback [Newspaper Article] — The Advertiser — 8 October 1931

BARRIERS RALLY After An Early Setback The aggregate turnover recorded in Bar riers on the Stock Exchange of Adelaide yesterday was about the lightest for any day since business began to brighten, anC la sympathy with the adverse movements in the London metal markets, all lines opened weaker. However, late in the day. they recovered sharply, and, in some cases, closed higher than on the previous day. Copper and tin concerns Jacked support. Trading in the gold section was of a re stricted character, and some stocks tended lower. Commonwealth loans supplied little business, but recent rates were, in most instances, fully maintained. Although little Improvement was noted in the demand for other Investments, the tone of the market was steady to firm. The following table shows how yester day's closing cash sales compared with preceding ones: — Rises Commonwealth 4 per cent.. 1957 .... 5/ Adelaide Electric 6 per cent., 1944 .. 15/ Adelaide Electric, 7»i per cent, 1933 .. 5/ S.A.
