COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 8 December 1859

COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. Now that Cftirwtmm tpproichec trade is improving, and we learn tfaiv the storekeepers are doing a fair amount of business, ceveral large country orders having been executed. Shearing is all but finUhod on most of the neighbour ing atatiune. and the wool despatched for shipment— a ctronmstaiice which may be attributed to the dry weathsr, and the facilities afforded .for outdoor labour. In many of the out-diitricts we bear a great many men are roaming about in aearch of employment, as many as sixty having called on one station in the course of ten d»?s. The Tootoom gold field* are, no doubt, the chief cause of this, these diggings h»ving unsettled a large cumber of labouring men, who left profitable employment to go to them/bat have now returned dis appointed, and find their aitoataons filled up by others. The mirfcet is to be well supplied with hone Btock, as will appear from our advertising columns. On Friday, tlie ]6th, nineteen bead of uddle and draught ho...

A mac named Frat-cis Duncan, a ehiprigger, be longing to Dundee, called at the shop of Mr. Burrelt, chetnis*, about midday, and asked for prusiic acid for killing rats. He was informed by Mr. Burrell that the article was not usually applied to such a purpose, and was refused Duncan then went to a second shop of Mr. Bum 11, at the High-street Pint, where he asked for oil of vitriol (sulphuric acid) from Mr. John Clark, th« young man io attendance, who questioned him as to the intended use of it, and who, in answer to a question, informed his cus tomer that it was poisonous, but that it was a very cruel and torturing method of killing ver min. This appeared to excite doubts in the man's mind, for, immediately be inquired for prusne acid instead, aud Mr. Clarke retired for a minute and returned with a bottle duly labelled with the article required, but which meantine he bad filled with pure wtter and a few grains...
