A RECORD MONTH. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 10 August 1914

A RECORD MONTH. E. M. Swyny, Secretary, Henry Halloran & Co. (Real Estate Experts), is an anti-scareite : — 1 am in receipt of your letter of 6th inst. Mr. Halloran is at present away from the State, but in his absence I have no hesitation in saying my firm quite agrees' with you in your views of the present financial position. There certainly seems to be no reason why our mutual welfare should suffer or any dislocation of business be created provided the public do not magnify the issues from the local standpoint. As far as our firm is concerned, this month has been an exceptionally good one as regards the making of sales, and we anticipate a record for what is usually one of. the quietest months of the year. ?, '

The Engineer in Local Government. THE NORTH SYDNEY EXTRAVAGANZA. What it Proved Wanting. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 10 August 1914

The Engineer in Local Government. THE NORTH SYDNEY EXTRAVAGANZA. What it Proved Wanting. A N.S.W. Local Government Engineer writes: — Ybiir report of the extraordinary Vagaries of the North Sydney Council is all of a piece with their, general conduct, for years past, and their treatment of .their Engineer'] calls for the attention of all L'.G. Engineers, or, indeed, of every engineer who can he dominated over by six or a i dozen men sometimes slung into positions for which they' are eminently unfitted1 by reason of the. elementary nature ; of their education, and often absolute want of either manners or justice. i am speaKtng in a general sense, j Know, that there.. are educated and just men in all councils. I shall omit any comment on the details of the unfair treatment to which the engineer was, and would have been subjected, . by a few who have evidently been animated by sheer spleen, and had it not been for the fairer minded and more manly portion of the council' would have been...

"FOR THE SAKE OF ALL CONCERNED." [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 10 August 1914

'FOR THE SAKE OF ALL CONCERNED.' Jos. A. Jackson, Director, Wormald Bros, (advertising Armoured Strong Room Doors, etc.), sets out an obvious duty : — In reply to yours of the Gth inst. To avoid the neces sity of a large number of workers being thrown out 'of employment we feel sure every effort will be made to at least complete work at present in hand and whilst stocks are still available. Later there may be difficulty in', supplying materials and the costs are likely to be very much higher. ? For the sake of all concerned manufacturers generally will surely make every effort to keep their works going, even at considerable sacrince; money must uu kcjji simu lating to avoid, as far as possible, nervousness and wide spread distress. If, therefore, manufacturers are prepared, to take their share ? in the depression the public will, we trust, help them all they possibly can. We have all got something to lose United we stand, divided we — fall!

"BUILDING'S" INFLUENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 10 August 1914

. - . . ? ^r ? 'BUILDING'S' INFLUENCE. J. P. Knight, Manufacturers' Agent (advertising 3-ply Veneer), mentions, among other things, what 'Building' ' can do: — ; . It would indeed be adding to our troubles if, because of the great international crisis that has now occurred, the general public became so panic stricken as to dis continue and bring to a full stop all building operations. Fortunately, we are so far from the seat of operations mat tins tact anci our spignaici isolation rcnucis us immune from attack, and it behoves the public generally to do all they can to provide work for our mechanics and labor generally, and thus help out during a period of what could easily be turned into complete stagnation and consequent misery. As is it numbers will be thrown out of employment because of the cessation of oversea shipments, and it behoves others to do all in their power to prevent any increase of the unemployed.' The writer considers that your influence with the Archi tects and the...

THE DUTY OF THE PRESS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 10 August 1914

THE DUTY OF THE PRESS. The 'S.M. Herald's' leader of last week respecting the duty of the press in this feverish period of excitement was appropriate- and opportune. Unfortunately the 'Herald's' splendid example of moderation from the outset was not emulated by ascertain section of the Sydney press, which placed 'record ? circulations'* and catch-penny editions before national duty. Indeed, the Empire was involved by a stray cable 'from America' before the decision of the British Cabinet in the matter. Evidently determined not to be'outbid, another newspaper at once commenced to record instances of business,. de- pression in the city. Among other things falsely stated, and at this time cruel in its incidence.' was the allegation that the building trade had fallen flat, or threatened to. The declaration was made on the statement of 'a certain contractor' who had a few houses to build, but who, as a consequence of the change in events, had decided not to build for the present. A promi...

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. President Braddon's Advice. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 10 August 1914

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. President Braddon's Advice. In the course of a remarkable address on Saturday, President Braddon said: — I do not wish it to be felt. there is any reason for scare or alarm. On the other hand, there is every reason why we should feel very confident. At the present moment our banks are extraordinarily strong from the point of view of gold, and gold is the commodity that talks inter nationally. Perhaps at the present moment the Australian banks arc stronger in this connection than those of any system of the civilised world. Gold concentrated in quantity as in the hands of the banks is useful, vitalised gold — capable of sustaining our credit and also keeping alive our thousands of industries or activities. On the other hand, gold withdrawn into private holding is gold devitalised, scattered and, there fore, entirely useless for sustaining our credit. : (The address is printed in extenso in the 'S.M. Herald' and should be read by all.)

EVERYTHING CALM. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 10 August 1914

? v ? ?, . EVERYTHING CALM. We do not know, for we cannot accurately gauge, what forbearance may yet have to be exercised; but if the present magnificent equanimity of the commercial world is preserved by its leaders, throughout the crisis, whatever may be the exactions of war will certainly be reduced to the minimum. - When those who have something beyond and above bare existence at stake can, in the face of disquieting circumstances, preserve the sane outlook, it is, in comprehensive phraseology, surely up to 'the followers' to bow to that superior wisdom and dis cretion, and regard the situation dispassionately and with tolerable cheerfulness, as 'the leaders' are now doing. * ? __ ? » ? ?? :
