Correspondence. THE FRUIT PACKING UNION. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 18 December 1896

GsiTespendeflee: THE FEUIT PACKING UNION. THE EDITOR. Sib,—I had great pleasure in reading your able article on the Renmark Fruit Packing Union, and as you state there I think there can be no doubt that combination is a scouret of strength and it is also my opinion that Renmark growers will find it to be to their best interests to ktjep in the Uuiou. But, Sir, if it would n t be thought presump tion on my part, I should !ike to make a suggestion, which might result in doing away with the present disaffec tion. If the Union were to have a depot of their own in Adelaide they would then be able to supply all the large houses with dried fruit, and I believe that they would realise better prices and be sold off much quicker than as under present arrangements. I am sure Renmark fruitgrowers need not fear competition, as their fruit is equal to any produced in the world. Their raisins and currants are far superior to the imported ones, and I always use them whenever 1" can pro cure them. N...

The Pioneer. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1896. IS RENMARK A FAILURE? [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 18 December 1896

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1896. IS BENMABK ' - A FAJMJRE? During the debate on tlie Gatvh r Plains Irri gation scheme 'in the Legislative Assembly last week, Renmark was occasionally referred to by the members, ami the Htm. A. Catt sj oke of this settlement as a failure. At a later stage in the discussion Mr. J. Blacker also made the bald state ment that irrigation did not pay at Mildura and Reninark. If the hap hazard remarks of these two honorable members are correct, it behoves us to consider whether we should not advise all our settlers to abandon their hold ings and allow the land of the settle ment to be taken from the debenture holders for a sheep run. Before taking such a step involving as it may the surrender of tens of thousands of invested capita], let us seriously ask the question, " Is Llenmark a failure?" Ill the first place what constitutes a failure ? The failure of the original promoters of the settlement does not imply that of the settlers themselves. If inefficient irr...
