PINS. Cum grapo salis. [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 21 October 1882

PINS. Cum g ra Pu .solis. Some time ago you '.vere pleased to have a fling at Juries-and, I think, vou abo had a slap at Judges. Your orT.mdin > juries were, it is true, Sydney ones, hut the Judges are die people's, and belong to the wiioje eolonv. We have had our own carnival latelv ; and' great was the rejoicing of those who like the show business of a Court of Justice, more than they do the blind goddess herself. Judge and Jury is su-di an old established English institution that your average citizen looks with horror upon any cross-grained individval who dares suggest anything so revolutionary as Courts of Conciliation, Conseils de Prud'hommes, or a departure from the Jury system. At the recent Sessions, no fault c?n be found in the finding of thf^jury in two cases, at any rate-much as thinking people may be inclined to doubt the wisdom of the third ; but i\ has certainly seemed to strike a good many, that the sentences in- flicted in the above two cases we e peculiar. One ma...

SPARKS [Newspaper Article] — Hawkesbury Chronicle and Farmers Advocate — 21 October 1882

SPARKS What a queer sense of justice some of our old law-makers must have had. Fancy a man being charged rent for premises alter tliey were burned down, Until the termination of his lease. Isn't it supremely funny ? Now, would it be just, to call the 3635 persons who visited the Art Gallery, on Sunday, Atheists ? Yet, there are Christian brothers who are ready to say so. Some of the Windsor riflemen shaped well at the »Sydney butts. There's nothing like coinmanderN leading the way ; there's an in- ducement for privates to follow. Rifle shooting, however, don't exactly gee with school teaching ; for " when the cat's away the mice will play"-however, it was so last week, in a public school in No. district. The wrry thc Veteran Lind Minister talked to that deputation thc other day, should he a caution to others ot that ilk. Though not agreeing with many oí thc old man's land notions, I c in bat admire his " straight', manner of dealing on tho occasion referred to Tiie other week I felt...
