The Bega Gazette. "Quod petis hi[?]est." SATURDAY, MAY 30, 1868. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 30 May 1868

Cftc Bega <®a«tte. " Quod petls bic est." SATURDAY, MAY 30, 1868. In many parts of the interior of this colony the inhabitants have no places of amusement where they can inno cently enjoy their spare hours; no place to go where they can instruct and improve their minds. They are, ■as it were, isolated from their fellows arid placed beyond the wholesome in fluences of society. They are entirely left to the evil instincts of the ani mal part of their nature. Sow broadcast, non-sectarian schools all over the colony, Laymen will argue. To both of these plans we heartily agree, but at the same time they are insufficient. First, at the present time the population is too Widely scattered for clergymen to be of as much service as they ought to be. People on hearing or seeing a minister of religion once in...

The Bega Gazette. "Quod petis hie est." SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 1868. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 6 June 1868

■» ^ recording their votes against the amendment. This decision proves the great revolution, of public opinion in England. The opposition by the Government to Mr Gladstone's motion was not in justification of the Irish Church Es tablishment, but solely on the old Tory considerations of conservatism. The new Premier, whatever policy he may attempt for expediency sake, will find that he must succumb to public opinion. The Irish Church he knosw full well to be at the root of Irish disaffection. In 1844;, in the House of Commons, Mr Disraelli, who at that time little dreamt of ever attaining the position of Prime Minis ter of England, thus explained his views on the Irish question, and the duty of an English Minister:— "That dense population, in extreme distress, inhabited an island where there was an Established Church, which was not their Church, and a territorial aris tocracy, the richest of whom lived in dis j tant capitals. Thus they had a starving [ population, an absentee aristoc...

MARRIAGE. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 6 June 1868

MARRIAGE. Marriage [is a serious thing. No woman should bind herself for life, without thoroughly understanding her own character and the character of the man to whom she is about to be united. She should understand the necessities of her heart and of her mind—what measure of affection will satisfy the one, and what intellectual pursuits are necessary to the other. Having settled these important pre liminaries, let her consider seriously how far the man who is about tp lead her to the altar is likely to sympathize with the wants of her nature. Will his heart and his mind be fit com panions forher own? Will his pre sence be always as agreeable as it is now in the first flush of youthful affection ? Will the years to come make no change in his feelings to wards her, or in hers towards him ? She should remember that the natural attraction which now brings them to gether must soon fade into indiffer ence, unless there exists that sympa thy between their natures which! will sustain and s...
