THE WEEK. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 23 March 1878

. THE WEEK. j CAN anyone give a satisfactory Mason for making the railway route a distinct party question ? Is subserviency to thc Ministry of the dVy a justification or even an excuse for [ such Yt proceeding? Or is it/ absolutely necessity, where there are twp organs of publie opinion, that ono should [always take thc wring «ide? lu minor maners uoliody cares mich if black be declared tillite, or vice vrrxil. But on this vital question of the rail- way, tim llockliainptou and western people have arrayed against them the Ministry of the day, backM up by southern aggressiveness on tlie ono batid, and pure localisé on tho other. Never waa there likely to/ bo a tougher struggle against adverse influences than that upou^whicli wc havo now entered. Yet our local contemporary/ who knows the overwhelming opinion of hit constituents on the subject, sicks to dividc/tlic camp, and to overbalance wbak judgment* by bold misstate- ments. THE STAIN OF PARENTAGE. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 23 March 1878

THE STAIN OF PARENTAGE. IN tlie woods forininig what remains of the forest of Ardennes, about a mile from a small village called Solenthal, a narrow path leads from a high road to a spot once occupied by charcoal burners, but now abandoned. It was a gloomy place. Thc ground for about an acre was block, where charcoal had been burned and stored, while a small fringe of green grass had perched itself forward from thc forest, and commenced regaining thc lost ground. In thc centre was a doop hole, to bc entered only on ono side by a path of narrow dimensions. In this was a small hut of wretched aspect, one of millions in France, where glitter and glory hide misery worse than that of Ireland in her worst days, where sound and show conceal from us Ki.OOO.OOO of paupers. This hut had no window, lt was curved in shape and closely resembled a wigwam of thc poorest class. | It consisted of three poles stuck in tho i ground, meeting at the ' top, those tied ! together, and tuon, of course, tha...

[?] and Sketches. MARKSON'S HOUSE. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 23 March 1878

Mát$ and f fatûw. MAltKSON'S HOUSE. IUIMH is my name--Joseph lîaines. I am a house-builder by profession, and os I do not often see my writings in print, except os pre- paid advertisements, 1 consider this a good opportunity to say to the public in general that I can build os good a bouse for a given sum of money as any other builder, and that I am a square niau to deal with. I am aware of tile fact that both of these assertions have been inado by many other persons about themselves ; but to prove their trustworthiness when uttered by me, tho public needs only to Juve mu a trial. (In jnsticu to other builders, must admit they can usc even this lost state mont of minc with perfect safety for thc present, and with prospective profit if they I get a contract to build a house.) I suppose it «-ill be considered very pre- sumptuous in mc to attempt to write a story, for, while some professions seem relatives of literature, I freely admit that there is no carpenter's tool which prepares on...
