On Saturday last a BrucekAuction was held' at the Council Chambers, In aid of the funds of the Alextndra Cottage Hospital, and as several persons had kindly sent in donations thertto, codsisting of grain, live stock, fowls torkeys, fancy goods, and a variety of msacellaneous articke, the result proved even more satisfactory than had been expected, some amusement being caused by artieles being purchased and then put up again by the suctloneor at the request of the'buyer, thus in some insttnoes realising far more than they were worth." There was a good attendance of buyers, and articles generally went for their fair value. ALEXANDRA COTTAGE HOSPITAL. A meeting of tho committee'took plaeoo on Thursday afternoon at the Council Chambers. Present,- Mr G. Whiting, President and Messrs Ainsworth, Long, Sampson, and Thom. Mr Curtels handed in account of sales of goods given to the late Bruce Auction, the amount being £34 10s 10d, Mr Sampeon, as Treasurer, having collected the amount.-The accounts in connection with the same were passed for payment, and a vote of thanks passed to Mr Curteis for his exertions in the matter. Mr A. G. Moon, handed in balance sheet of the Amateur performance given on Saturday last, together with cheque for £9 28 6d amount netted by same. A unanimous vote of thanks was passed to the Alexandra Dramatic Club, including all who so ably assisted in the successlul result of the performance referred to. THE UNITED FIRE BRt.GADES' DEMONSTRATION. BIECHIWOnTI, Friday. The annual demonstration of the United Fire Brigades was commenced r to-day at Beeohworth. The large a attendance secured last year at Mel- o bourne could not of course be expected, a yet no fewer than 52 brigades were r represented, and there was a total muster of about 900 firemen. The hotels were all crowded, and various public buildings were utilised as dormitories for the firemen, and their comfort was w?oll looked after. 'The banks and shou? have been closed, and it is quite a gel?s time for the Beech worth people. The brigades mustered this morning in the reserve at the railway station. Their apparatus was examined by ex-Superintendent Connelly, Captains Taylor, Thomson, and Morris, ox-Captain Brown, and Messrs Evans and Cunningham, and the brigades were then marshalled into processional order by Mr E.
