BYRON BAY SWIMMING BATHS. To the Editor of the Record. [Newspaper Article] — The Byron Bay Record — 10 October 1903

BYRON BAY SWIMMING BATHS. To the Editor of the Record. SIR. — Would you be so kind as to allow me a small space in your valu able paper re the above subject. To my mind it seems a thousand pities to think you possess such a magnificent seaside resort and do not put, what I may term, the finish ing touch to same. I have had the pleasure of visiting most of the seaside resorts in Aus tralia, and I might safely say, this is the first one I have struck minus this most important item. Take Wynnum, near Brisbane, for in stance, it has nothing to recommend it, like your beautiful Bay has, and yet it has magnificent baths, I might safely say 45 yards square. What is the result ? This formerly disre guarded, seaside resort is now be coming most popular. Whv hesitate in erecting baths here ': Surely common humanity leinands same. You cannot teach the young very well how to swim unless you have an enclosed space, to prevent sharks from coming in, iind other dangers. Be advised by one who has t...

A New Use For Milk. [Newspaper Article] — The Byron Bay Record — 10 October 1903

A \«'\v i:s-: Tor Milk. j ? o ? ! At the hygienic milk supply ex-j liibition, which was lately held at Hamburg and Vienna exhibited a number of objects which seemingly had nothing whatsoever to do with hygienic milk supply. There werej shown, nicely arranged in glass boxes, combs seemingly made of! horn, cigar-holders, with amber; coloured mouthpieces : knives ami! forks, with handles similar in ap pearance to ebony : ferrules for uiu Oreilas and sticks, and balls, rings chess figure:--, dominoes, etc. ; alsoj a small' table with an inlaid marble slab, and finally a number of thick slabs and staves with every imagin able variation of marble colours, but of considerably less weight than real marble. These objects were made of ' giilalith,' which means milk stone. Skimmed milk in spite of its many valuable qualities, has so far been little used. It contains a consider able portion of nutritious matters, i.e., 1 liter (1.05 quarts) of skimmed milk is of about equal value to a quarter o...

DAIRY & FARM. Land for Closer Settlement. THE KYOGLE ESTATE PURCHASED BY A VICTORIAN SYNDICATE. [Newspaper Article] — The Byron Bay Record — 10 October 1903

[?] Laud for Closer &c'ttle:iieiit. THE KYOGLE ESTATE PURCHASED BY A VICTORIAN SYNDICATE. On the 2nd inst. the sale of Kyoglo Estate consisting of 41,05:} acres, to gether with 8,500 head of stock, was privately effected, the amount of the purchase money being, in round numbers, £200,000. The transaction becomes of more than ordinary interest from the fact that the purchasers are a Victorian syndicate, who have acquired the property for the purpose of closer settlement, and the two adjoining -;states, Runny mede and Wyangerie have likewise been bought by Vic torians, with the same object in view. The Kyogle estate is situated about 15 miles from Casino, and consists of beautiful undulating land for the most part and rich alluvial flats along the river. There are watercourses every mile or two, which are overflowing. Adjoining it, on the north-western side, is the Wyangerie Estate, of 22,000 acres, whidla Messrs. W. Manifold and Mac kinnon have purchased, and on the South sid...

Extraordinary Child Neglect. [Newspaper Article] — The Byron Bay Record — 10 October 1903

Extraordinary Child Neglect. ? ?? ? A case of extraordinary child neg lect was heard before a Sydney Police Court last week. The mother Agnes Martin, aged 20, was charged with the offence. The evidence of the prosecuting policeman went to show that he saw the child. Hilda Martin, in a vard playing with fowls. She had no hat or boots on. She was scratching in the earth with her foot, picking up things with her fingers, crowing and imitating fowls in every way. She would crawl through any small openings and follow the fowls round the yard, which was composed of rock. In the bottom corner there was a declivity with nothing to pro tect the infant from falling over. He went again on the 17th, 18th 19th and 20th instant, and on each occasion saw the child acting in a similar manner. The fowls were there every day. It was a cold, bleak day on the 19th and it rained about dinner-time, when the child was left in the yard. On one occas ion he saw the accused come through the gate into the yar...
