Habib should decide who is his boss [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 28 July 1982
Habib should decide who is his boss The Middle East picture continues to be muddled with every new report out of Beirut. But one of the most disturbing stories to be brought to public light comes not from war-tom Lebanon but from our nation’s capital (which isn’t so surprising). The Washington Post reported that President Reagan’s special envoy to the Middle East, Philip Habib, is a paid consultant for Bechtel Group, Inc. The disturbing element is not the fact that Habib holds another job but the company he works with is a construction firm that is reported to have major business interests with Arab countries. Sen. Larry Pressler, R-S.D., a Foreign Relations Committee member callled the situation a “very, very serious matter if (Habib) is on the Bechtel payroll. He will lose all his credibility in the Mideast and I think it is going to impair the effectiveness of Secretary Shultz. Whether Habib’s association with Bechtel will impair Shultz’s effectiveness remains to be seen but ther...
VIEWPOINTS Here and Now Students beware college professors wearing three-piece pin-striped suits [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 28 July 1982
VIEWPOINTS Here and Now Students beware college professors wearing three-piece pin-striped suits By MAXWELL GLEN and CODY SHEARER WASHINGTON Don’t look now, but the days of the wonder-fully-innocent, absent-minded professor may be gone. Corporate American now underwrites some $2OO million worth of scientific research in our university laboratories. It seems many of our once-detached scholars are turning into shrewdly-minded Daddy War-buck’s-in-lab coats. Examples abound of big business’recent efforts to tap the intellectual wellhead on campus. Exxon plans to spend between $7 million and $8 million over the next 10 years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology alone for studies of new ways to generate usable gas products. Meanwhile, computer and engineering experts at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University, backed by more than $5 million from Westinghouse and Digital Equipment Corp., have formed a “Robotics Institute” to offer research on the automated factory of tomorrow. And ...

Chlebek hires two assistants to fill football staff vacancies Sports [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 28 July 1982
Chlebek hires two assistants to fill football staff vacancies Sports By MARTY PANTAGES Sports Editor Chuck Reisland, a high school coach from Brunswick and Dave McCarney, a Michigan Tech College coach, have joined Kent State head football coach Ed Chlebek’s staff for the upcoming season. Reisland will replace Vern Sharbaugh, who resigned for personal reasons, and McCarney will replace Denny Doornbos, who accepted an assistant coaching position on Bo Schembechler’s University of Michigan staff. Reisland, 36, led Brunswick to a 50-47-3 record in 10 seasons. Brunswick won the Pioneer Conference championship in 1981 and Reisland was named the Akron Beacon Journal’s Medina County Coach of the Year. “I’m really glad to get this opportunity,” said Reisland, who was a linebacker for the Flashes from 1965-67. “It’s something I’ve definately strived to get.” REISLAND said he believes the KSU program is on the rebound. “The Kent program is on the upswing, and they’ve had real good recruiting c...

ENTERTAINMENT "TRON" brings electronic age to theaters [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 28 July 1982
ENTERTAINMENT "TRON" brings electronic age to theaters By MEGAN HARDING Entertainment Editor “TRON” Directed by Steven Lisberger for producer Donald Kushner and executive producer Ron Miller. Screenplay by Steven Lisberger from a story by Lisberger and Bonnie Macßird. Walt Disney Productions, 1982. “TRON,” the recently released Walt Disney movie, has all the elements of a Hollywood adventure thriller, but these are secondary to the real star of the show —a new form of animation called computer generated imagery. The high-tech visual effects are a natural for the story, a fantasy about the world inside of a vast computer circuit. Here the human programmers, known as “Users,” struggle to regain control of the monster they have created. THE HERO is Flynn (Jeff Bridges) the pinball wizard of the video generation. The heavy, Dillinger (David Warner), is a sort of video-game mogul who has risen to the top of a huge and impersonal information conglomerate, ENCOM. But the company is really ...
Townshend solo album shows he's the brain, guts of Who [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 28 July 1982
Townshend solo album shows he's the brain, guts of Who By TOM WILLS Staff Writer Pete Townshend “All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes. ” Produced by Chris Thomas. Recorded By Bill Price. Atco/Eel Pie Recording Productions, 1982. If The Who’s last three records (Face Dances, Who Are You and Who By Numbers) were as powerful as headman Pete Townshend’s third solo disc All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes , then that band would still hold the undisputed crown to rock and roll. On Chinese Eyes Townshend examines pain, love, habits, war and platinum stardom. This seems to be an intensely personal work for Townshend, who recently completed treatment for alcoholism. The songs do not come across depressing, however, as the songwriter has a knack for finding solutions to the problems. Townshend’s 1980 work Empty Glass was a good record, but Chinese Eyes is far superior in musical and lyrical quality. THE RECORD features some excellent rock music the type The Who used to play. Slit Skirts ...
