ADDITION TO SLANG TALK . [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 27 March 1903
ADDITION TO SLANG TALK . Said Latest Expression Was Coined in This Locality . Danville Democrat : Anything on the rail for the lizard ; is the latest and newest slang phrase , and although it was invented a little more than a month ago , it has gained wide-spread use , and it is now entitled to a prominent place in the vocabulary of the youth of the street and in the dictionary of street vernacular . Anything on the rail for the lizard » is now heard from Frisco to the Battery and Blackwells Island and from Gobin to Xorth Vermilion streets , and though it has several signilicances it corresponds with the commonplace Anything doing What s , up ? and How are they rolling ? Xow comes the story that the phrase was coined over in Champaign and Urbana , they of the fraternal suppers , color rushes and college yells , and the story of its alleged origin is interesting . In the University town there is a sort of an aimless and lazy fellow who mingles with the students when they are out for ...

THEY MAKE BETTER WIVES . [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 27 March 1903
THEY MAKE BETTER WIVES . Let old-lushioiied people croak aa they will , remarked a well-known literary woman lately , says Cassells Journal , but in my opinion the modern girl is a great advance on the maidens of a generation ago . Freedom and fresh air have made her more self-reliant and healthier in tone . She may be mora hoydenlsh , but she is less hysterical . Instead of working samplers or shedding sickly tears over sentimental novels , she is out and about getting an insight , into the world and its ways . As a result she makes a- good , wife , one who can share lier husbands tastes , understand his difficulties and act as his chum and partner . The wife of the past was too often ft childish , sentimental woman , -with so little knowledge of the world that she was quite helpless if it was her fate to be deprived of her husband s support . But to-day it is not an-un-common . thing to find women as capable in business , as their husbands . Cnrlons Old EnRlUh Custom , An old cust...
A THREATENING EVIL . [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 27 March 1903
A THREATENING EVIL . It is the popular habit to attack the senate of the United States with general condemnation . This is misleading , says a writer in Century . An honest man , who knows the senate intimately in all its workings , the other day said of it that any such sweeping attack had the inexactness of caricature , the fact being that the senate contains a group of well-equipped and disinterested public men who have become experts in governmental questions , and who get through in the course of the year an immense amount of useful public business . There is much truth in this . But the other thing is true also , that state after state , and some of our oldest states , are represented by men whom it is a loss of reputation to associate with intimately ; who got their seats by corrupt practices of one kind or another ; and whose presence in the senate is an advertisement of the low tone of the state machines and legislatures , through whose corrupt management , or virtual purch...
ZESTFUL FRANKNESS . [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 27 March 1903
ZESTFUL FRANKNESS . Unexpected frankness now and then gives a special zest to the humor of a situation in congress . When Gabe Bouck was the representative from the Oshkosh \ district of Wisconsin , a pension bill came before the house , to his great vexation of spirit ; for , while his personal convictions were directly opposed to it , his political interests were strong enough to whip him into line . On the day the bill came up for final disposal a fellow member met Bouck in the space behind the hist row of seats , walking back and forth and gesticulating excitedly , bringing his clenched right fist down into the hollow of his left hand , to the accompaniment of expletives which would hardly look well in print , writes Francis E . Leupp in Some Humors of Congress . What s the trouble , Gabe ? inquired his friend . Why all this excitement ? . Trouble ? snorted the irate lawmaker . Trouble enough ! That pension bill is up , and all the . cowardly nincompoops in the house are going t...
