PROFITS OF GROWING LOCUST TIMBKit . [ For the Prairie Furmer . _ MESSRS . EDITORS : Similar calculations . to the following were published in the Peoria Register some years since , for the purpose of convincing some eastern landholders in this county that an investment of that kind would not be unprofitable , even for the timber on the land in cultivation , without reference to the advantages that would result from having a large quantity of prairie land surrounding it . DISASTERS BY LIGHTNING . [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 October 1845

DISASTERS BY LIGHTNING . The destruction by lightning during the present season has been so extensive ,, that were all the facts collected and placed before the public together , they would present a picture the most fearful and appalling . No loss of steamboats or railroad cars that has ever occurred affords a comparison to the work of this death-carrying agent . We have scarcely opened a newspaper this season that did not cont ain a record of One or more of its disasters ; and from cases learned by letters and conversation we are certain that but a small portion of them find tlieir way inlo the papers . This very day a letter from a .. gentleman in the southern part of thisState says : • .. •• • I have been seriously afflicted this summer by the loss of my eldest daughter , aged fifteen , who was killed by lig htning while sitting near the fire-place . One farmer near here had his barn struck in the early part of the season ; and another who had just filled ; his—a very large one—...

ENLARGE 3 IENT OF THE PATER-DELINQUENT SUBSCRIBERS . [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 October 1845

ENLARGE 3 IENT OF THE PATER-DELINQUENT SUBSCRIBERS . [ For the Prairie Farmer . MESSRS . EDITORS : I see by page 212 , last number , that if all subscribers to the Prairie Farmer pay their dues , you will issue the next volume with 32 pages . To secure ihe enlargement as you promised , has , to my certainknowledge , been a strong inducement to procure subscribers , and many have subscribed herewith the-hope that next year it would contain 32 pages . The year is fast drawing to a close , and for one I want to know what is to be the size next year , before I do much for il . We in Wisconsin take as much interest in its prosperity as any of the Suckers , and we regard it as the agricultural paper of the whole West . But we do not want you to get rich out of it in a hurry ; or at least while it is so hard work for us farmers to make our ends meet , we think you should share a portion of the burthen of the day , and g ive us as much reading as you can afford for the price . I have been m...

CHICAGO MARKE'I [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 October 1845

CHICAGO MARKEI Prairie farmer Office ; Oct . 3 , 1845 . The trade in wheat appears to have been , during the last mouth , very much a matter of speculation , based on the very uncertain ieports of the probable state of crops in England . Under the idea that crops would fall short there , wheat went up here to 75 cents , at which price the market continued active for many days . A contrary story has sunk it to 60 cents , where it will probably stand till more news from Europe . ¦ The quantity received during the last month has been large—probably not much less than 204 , 000 bushels —a * high as 20 , 000 bushels having been received in a day . The roads arc now getting heavy , and the receipts are falling off . Beef packing , has not , begun in earnest yet • but prices are established— $ 2 to $ 2 . 50 per 100 being paid . The horse market is active and prices have improved a trifle . , . _ . -v — ( X ^* It has been noticed , perhaps , that our paper has been late in its appearance fo...
