Virginia's Halloween Charm [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 October 1907

Virginias Halloween Charm BY BERTHA E . BUSH , Written for The Farmer s Wife . The tall clock on the landing strucK . twelve . How solemn and fearsome it was in the quiet house . The time has come Virginia , whispered Hephzibah solemnly . But Virginia snuggled down deeper Into the great feather bed and pulled the covers over her head . I dont want to try . It , came in muffled tones from beneath the blankets . But you must , said Hephzibah , mercilessly pulling away all the protecting bedclothes . You promised . If you dont do It now , I will think that you a afraid . I believe I am afraid , said Virginia piteously . Afraid ! And your father a soldier in Washington s army . Well , I might expect it . They will give up beaten ,, and so will you . Then Virginia rose desperately and put on her little blue dressing-gown and slippers . She could not bear that taunt . She would go If it killed her . Butoh the terror of the dark halls and passages , the steep narrow cellar stairs and tho d...

The Cellar [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 October 1907

The Cellar BY JOHN UPTON . TO M « R « OUTCECUflFt • TOP VCCW Of CEltAH WINDOW OB rtfina tr DUMC In excavating for the cellar , one should go deep enough to insure against frost heaving tho walls ; at least four feet . If good drainage cannot be secured at this depth , the wall should be banked with earth to this height . It , is well to dig deeper than this , as the cellar will be warmer in winter and cooler in summer , if deep in the ground . It Is generally wisest to have a cellar under the entire house . It costs but little more , since a wall must be built for a foundation anyway . The extra room is always convenient , good ventilation is secured and there are no damp rooms . Besides , you will need a good sized cellar to have room for a cistern , coal bin , closet for canned fruit , milk room and perhaps a furnace or hot water heater . Provide enough windows for good light and ventilation j one on each side or end . Plan for the outside cellar door , and an entrance as nearly l...

A Modern Cottage [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 October 1907

A Modern Cottage Design No . 23 The six-room cottage shown herewith is of pleasing design and economical of construction . First story contains reception hall , living room , dining room and kitchen and there are two bed rooms and bath room in second story . All the rooms are of good size and conveniently arranged . One chimney is sufficient , as it is in center of house and stoves can be arranged in living room , dining room , or kitchen . If desired the house can be heated by a furnace , as the chimney extends to basement . Basement extends under the whole house and has an outside stairway as well as -a stair By Geo . S . Kingsley , Architect . way from first _ story . There are front and rear porches and plaster gables in main building as well as in front porch . Altogether it makes a desirable little home for a small family , either in city or country . It is very difficult for me to give an estimate of cost that will be correct for every locality , owing to the difference in co...

¦ A Plaster Cable Hmise [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 October 1907

¦ A Plaster Cable Hmise By Geo . S . Kingsley , Architect Design No . . 97 . A favorite design of nine rooms is shown in the illustrations accompanying this article . A plaster gable to my mind nets off a house in a way that cannot be accomplished in any other manner at such small expense . To be done right plaster work of this character should be done on metal lath , as wood lath will nhrink and thereby crack the plaster . By paneling the gable with wooden strip , with the plaster between , various designs can be carried out . This particular design has two plaster gables , besides the porch { able . The plan of this house is also attractive and somewhat novel as to arrangement . The bath room is located on . the first floor owing to the fact that this house was designed for an elderly couple who wanted their bed room on the first floor and adiacent to bath room .- , There are four rooms on each floor in this plan , besides pantry , closets , etc . Front and rear stairs have also b...

TUL PS [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 October 1907

TUL PS What an almost infinite variety ! One Holland florist one year offered 1 , 800 distinct varieties . There is no use in having so many . Get a few of the leading sorts . They are marvelous in variety and from . There are the early and late single , arid the early and late ^ doubletrie large full white and red which look like roses . Then there are the deep red and the golden . How many of the prismatic colors are woven into those garments of . beauty . _ Then there come the unique parrot tulips ,, fairly grotesque in their gaudy robes . People will look on a bed in full bloom in spring time and ask , How do you sell them ? I must have some and have some now . Better wait a while . Plant along in October . Have your grounds rich and in fine condition , then put in the bulbs in rows about a foot apart and six inches apart in the row . Put them in about six inches deep . Cover with fine earth and then put on about four inches of mulching of some kind . They are very hardy . I hav...

THE SAVING OF TIME [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 October 1907

THE SAVING OF TIME The saving in cost of hauling loads to market over good roads compared with the same haul over bad roads has been strikingly illustrated again and again and with a fair degree of accuracy . But the saving of time in driving over good roads as compared with poor ones has not been given the consideration it merits . This saving of good roads with equal force whether they be used by the farmer in going to town in his light carriage , the automobilist or the bicyclist . It has been estimated that a half hour s time can be saved in passing over every five miles of good road as compared with the same length of bad road . As time has never been more valuable than it is in these days of the twentieth century , here is another argument for the good roads movement that is often over looked . SELLING BY THE POUND . The custom of retailing such prod uce as fruits and vegetables by weight instead of by measure makes slow headway . In portions of the west , particularly on the ...

SENTENCES . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 October 1907

SENTENCES . If you wish a thing done , go ; if not , send . Love your neighbor , yet pull not down your hedge . Poor men seek meat for their stomach ; rich men stomach for their meat . Small cheer and great welcome make a great feast . A cheerful look makes a plain dish a feast . The soul is not where it lies , hut where it loves . The way to live much is to live well betimes . Great hopes make great men . Be what thou wouldst seem to be . When a friend asks , there is no tomorrow .
