SPRAYING WITH JNSECTICIDES > . _ . AND FUNGICIDES ., .... . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 14 May 1896

SPRAYING WITH JNSECTICIDES > . _ . AND FUNGICIDES ., .... . . * ( Purdue : University . Agricultural ^ Experiment ; Station , Bulletin No . - 24 . ) . . THE season-for spraying our orchards and vineyards is at hand , and it should be attended to at once . It is estimated that the apple crop alone in Indiana , in an . Ordinary season , amounts to , approximately , 3 , 000 , 000 bushels ,, and it is also estimated that at least two-thirds of these would be ! classed as seconds in the market , owing to the defects caused by insects and fungi . This means a direct loss to the farmers of the state from this one cause of at least $ 500 ,- 000 annually . The same may be said of all other kinds of fruit to a greater or less extent , so that a set of spraying machinery has come to be just as essential to successful fruit culture as the trees themselves ; for it has been thoroughly demonstrated that from 80 to 90 per cent , of the fruit crop can be saved in perfect condition by an ...

NEWS CG > MA ENTS [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 21 May 1896

NEWS CG > MA \ ENTS Wm ., Deermg , the great mower and harvester manufacturer , has just made a princely donation of $ 215 , 000 to Northwestern University at Evanston . As the farmers of the United States contributed the funds which made this splendid gift possible , they will naturally feel an interest in the institution which has been benefitted . We are glad to bear witness to its forty years of growing usefulness and the high standing it has attained among the great institutions of the country . Heavy windstorms swept across the whole country from southwest to northeast last week . In some places the wind reached the power of a cyclone and left devastation and ruin in itsvpath . Considerable damage was done to shipping on the great lakes . One schooner , the Mary D . Ayer . of Chicago , was sunk , with a crew of seven men , five of whom were drowned . In Marshall and Nemaha counties , Kansas , the cyclone caused great loss of property and lifer At Seneca five hundred...

A brilliant complexion is a beauty In Itself ! It pleases the eyes of thoughtless people and the minds of thinking people . They know that a really good complexion is a sign of health , and created by Nature . There are different ways of imitating a fine complexion : cosmetics , which deceive nobody , but ruin the skin and make the user look silly and prematurely old ; stimulants which only give a temporary flush ; dangerous drugs which drive pimply disorders from the face back into the blood . All these counterfeit complexions are unsafe and easily detected . But the genuine , unmistakeable , much-admired color and clearness of health can only be obtained by clearing all bilious matters and humors out of the blood . The first step towards creating a fpoa complexion by Nature s own method is to get the blood clear , and the circulation free and active . There is no complexion so sallow , muddy or pimply but it will be cleared and brightened by Dr . Pierce s Golden Medical Discovery ...

DIETING-LITE STOCK . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 21 May 1896

DIETING-LITE STOCK . T HIS is the season when liye stock can be . easily dieted in the interest . of health , as a rule . The extremes are to / be guarded against , however . The conservar tive idea is , beware of grass , as it has a weakening effect on the horse at work ,: makes flabby meat , and tainted butter . The poor animals thus denied nature s tonic syffer because there is not enough inventive genius or of the spirit of observation to devise a moderate and safe way of using the grass . The combination of sheaf oats or dry corn and over-ripe hay with the early grazing ration will usually balance and prevent the loosening effects of the new grass . In severe cases where the animal is known to be easily affected , and where straw , corn fodder or over-mature hay are not available , the use of lime in the drinking water , suggested recently in our notes on grazing , is in order . Other remedies also exist . For the stock denied any range for grazing , after the middle of May , g...

DAIRYING IN ALBERTA . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 21 May 1896

DAIRYING IN ALBERTA . ( Extract from * an address by Sidney L . Smith , Colgary , Alberta , before , the Northwest Da rymen s Convention , March 25 , 189 , 6 . ) A 1 LBERTA could and should turn out $ 30 , 000 , 000 worth . of . diairy produce before the end of the . next dozen years . With her 1 , 000 f arriiers she should milk 10 , 000 cows . At the low average of ten , pounds of milk per day per cow rtesting four per cent , the value of the butter at sixteen cents per pound would be $ 143 , 300 , Equal to 3 , 582 steers at $ 40 each . If we should make up pur minds to try to do this , how should we begin . First , We should have a love for the w ° rk « Many people think it almost disgraceful to milk cows . ; Such people will surely make a failure of dairying . The person who likes his work , will look to the comfort of his cows . A cow is simply a machine for the manufacture of milk , butter and cheese out of the coarse , unsalable fodders and grain produced on the farm . The bet...

CARE AND CHURNING OF SEPA -RATOR CREAM . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 21 May 1896

CARE AND CHURNING OF SEPARATOR CREAM . IN the dairy bulletin issued by the Dairy School of the Ontario Agricultural College , ! Guelph , Ont ., is an interesting : paper on Care and Churning of Separator Cream , by . Mr . T . C . Rogers , dairy instructor . From it we take the following extract : The cream being at a high teriiperature as it comes from the separator , it is very necessary that ample provision be made for cooling it to a proper temperature immediately after separation . High ripening and churning temperatures give the butter a soft , oily texture that diminishes its value . Plenty of ice should be securely stored at the proper time for use when needed , and a cream copier should be made to hold ice and water , over which the -cream may flow from the separator to the cream vat . This vat should be deep and narrow , with a seven or eight inch space around it for water and ice , so that , for ripening , the cream may be cooled to sixty degrees within one hour after sepa...
